Forget Shakespeare and Nathaniel Hawthorne, says a former English teacher. Assign teens books from authors like Toni Morrison and Stephen King.
Stop Assigning Boring Books in English Class (Opinion)
Many teens and young adults aren’t reading for pleasure anymore. School isn’t helping.

Yeah, I’m not sure how I managed to dodge that bullet. In one class I think we had to choose between two books to read and one was Young Goodman Brown and I don’t remember the other one even though I picked that. And that was my closest brush with Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Man, people do love a story about witches cursing witch hunters... was Nathaniel Hawthorne patient zero on that or was it a pre-existing trope when he wrote it?

Pleasant is a rainy winter's day, within doors! The best study for such a day, or the best amusement—call it which you will—is a book of travels, describing scenes the most unlike that sombre one.

There are lessons in history for so much, if only people would / could pay attention.
Nathaniel Hawthorne has always been relevant, because The Scarlet Letter was about people, not a particular time.

I would rather read Hawthorne than watch TV. And I ~hate~ Nathaniel Hawthorne.

I recently read Rappacinni’s Daughter (1844) by Nathaniel Hawthorne and enjoyed it! Frankenstein is another early SFF favourite of mine.
What pre-1950s SFF would you recommend to a modern reader for pure enjoyment.

Not “important to genre history,” just pure fun.

Bonus points if it’s not by Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov, or Bradbury.

Apologies to Nathaniel Hawthorne Scarlet F?

There are a ton of references to movies that he likes, movies that reinforce, at least on a very surface level, the glamor of Tony's existence. He often applies fictional roles to real people's personalities. But then he looks at a painting or a Nathaniel Hawthorne quote and feels attacked.

if nathaniel hawthorne was an MMA fighter he would use the gable grip. he'd use it 7 times because thats how many gables likes

And as Nathaniel Hawthorne was trying to tell us in "Yoing Goodman Brown," this conspiracy dates all the way back to the 1600s. Minimum.

J'ai plus souvenir de ce que notre prof d'anglais nous avait fait lire 😅

On a eu à lire du Shakespeare, et d'autres classiques anglais. Elle nous avait également fait lire The Scarlett Letter, par Nathaniel Hawthorne.
