Welcome, new followers! I mostly post about scholarship on nineteenth century American social, cultural, and literary history, print culture, and my dog. My cat too. Expect lots of stuff about archives, and very little about politics, because I keep that offline. Glad you’re here! 🙌

I woke up feeling distinctly logy, and thinking it was down to being cooped up on a rainy, gray day, I parked myself in front of my happy light for a few hours. Turns out that I’m coming down with something. Seriously bummed 🙁

I love, love, love Laura Edwards’ work, but these vertical running heads (running shoulders?) are a literal pain in the neck. Total graphic design fail 🗃️

I had occasion to check something in my almost 18 year old book just now, and there really needs to be a long German word for the simultaneous experience of enormous pride and cringe-inducing embarrassment one feels on reading one's earlier, or earliest, works of scholarship.

The last few months, I’ve been working intensively with records of early C19 Boston Justices of the Peace. There’s hardly any scholarship about them, so to clarify matters, I bought a copy of the justicing manual they would have used and decided to learn they way they did: by the book 🗃️

It’s a cold, gray, rainy day here, and I decided I needed to go out and get hot chocolate to boost my spirits. I’m pretending that the pattern on the foam is a tulip 🌷

I am so sad to learn that Greg Brown has passed away. He was a founding member of Cake, and he really helped shape their retro-funky sound. Here he is live, playing a vintage Guild Starfire, on the band’s wonderful cut, Jolene. RIP.

It’s hard to see how the republic can survive three more years of this increasingly cruel and reckless behavior, and that saddens and terrifies me in equal measure.

This kind of stopped me in my tracks. Kudos to this man for speaking powerfully, and with unwavering moral clarity, about our collective obligation to fight cruelty and hate wherever, and whenever, we see it.

One of my students took this picture of Tulip in class. While she can be very busy at times, mostly, she just lounges around and cuddles her llama dolly. We talk about some pretty distressing topics, and Tulip helps provide emotional support for anyone who needs it.
