Herodias, mother of Salome, swoons at the sight of the head of John the Baptist, which she had urged her daughter to demand on a platter. The bottom of the canvas was cut to eliminate the grisly detail of John’s head. Francesco Cairo made something of a specialty of grisly subjects.

Koningin Elizabeth I van Engeland werd op deze dag in 1599 gekroond in Westminster Abbey in Londen. Daar ligt ze ook begraven. Ik zie nu ineens dat die kroon niet echt op haar hoofd zit.

Identification by costume? The portrait is painted by Paul van Somer and is thought to represent Sir Rowland Cotton, whose c1618 costume, thought to be the same as that worn by the sitter in the painting, is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Identification by costume? The portrait is painted by Paul van Somer and is thought to represent Sir Rowland Cotton, whose c1618 costume, thought to be the same as that worn by the sitter in the painting, is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

#Onthisday in 1872, "Greyfriars Bobby" died in Edinburgh. Legend has it that he spent 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until his own death. The statue was made the same year so no doubt resembles him. People, including myself, can't resist stroking his cute little nose. 🥰

Autisme Barbie is gelanceerd. Als iemand die het zelf heeft, vind ik het problematisch. Het autisme spectrum is zo breed, daarin heeft Mattel keuzes gemaakt, zoals een noise cancelling koptelefoon en wijde kleding (minder prikkels). Dat kan ook stereotyperend en zelfs stigmatiserend werken.

Vraag me toch af: waarom in dat relatief kleine plantsoentje en niet in de ook vrij toegankelijke Rijkstuinen? De zomer-beeldententoonstellingen laten zien dat er prima visuele dialoog kan plaatsvinden tussen moderne sculpturen en oude bouwfragmenten. 🤔 #dtv

According to his 1669 inventory, Ferdinand Bol owned one of the medals commemorating his colleague Govert Flinck's death at the age of 45. Flinck had won the commission for a Batavian series for the Town Hall but had died completely unexpectedly on 2 February 1660.

We evacuated our kids out of Minneapolis this weekend and my spouse reports that as she drove them out of town she saw "multiple freeway exits where people are being pulled over." It feels like the Twin Cities is being subjugated by a hostile occupying force.
