The thought came to me in the middle of the night a few weeks ago, that the 21 great novels of the Patrick O’Brian “Aubrey-Maturin” series (see, e.g., “Master & Commander”) are just Frog and Toad set in the British Naval effort of the Napoleonic Wars. It’s really all about friendship.

...is that Maturin?

Current book: Naval sea captain or naval surgeon

Most recent completed book: an Australian magpie in Aotearoa New Zealand who becomes a social media star.

In the span of like 10 page of Master and Commander, Stephen Maturin rants about the inherent stupidity of patriotism/nationalism and sings a little song to a snake he rescued. I feel a spiritual connection with him.

What no one (except my wife) told me about the Aubrey-Maturin books is they're frequently laugh out loud funny.

Big year for movies and books.
At the start of 2025 I’d never read a single Aubrey-Maturin or Murderbot book, and I finished both series this year (they’re surprisingly complimentary), plus a few new titles by favorite authors.
I also watched over 700 movies, 68 in theaters.
And wrote 363 poems.
Quote this with what you have accomplished in 2025, no matter how big or small
Reading & writing has kept me alive this year.

Somehow, it’s been my most productive year as an author.

Here’s a guide to what I’ve published in 2025, in case you’ve lost track.

As far as I know it started out as an AU fanfic of the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian!
Naomi Novik has been active in fandom for decades, she's one of the founders of AO3 even!
But fundamentally, Temeraire *starts out*as a fanfic idea, and becomes its own very distinct thing.

Maturin will bless their love and keep them remembering, although maybe not so much abut when they were kids

And for the love of Maturin, post links to your work! I have had to politely yell at some very good creators who groused about not making sales when they didn’t even have a shop link in their bio!

I really want a Stephen King adaptation that shows off Maturin the space turtle.

I loved some books this year (The Wayfinder, Gliff, What We Can Know). But the highlight of my year was returning to the Aubrey-Maturin series--this time on audio, superbly read by Patrick Tull, whose reading elevates them splendidly. Give yourself a gift this year and listen to the whole series.

This book primed me for the Aubrey-Maturin novels

She sure does check a lot of boxes for Maturin, especially. Mercurial in her moods, definitely his dream girl. I think she's described as "lissome" or "lithe" so yeah, I could see pixie fitting too

If Zooey Deschanel played her in an A&M movie, I'd believe it. Or Keira Knightley

The Aubrey–Maturin books are an option too.
