yeah i wonder if this is something we wouldn't call a longsword in english? i'm not finding anything so far which has a blade shaped like this and i'm not sure who made things like this in bronze in that era. i wonder if it's a descendent of a spatha.

oh i found a closeup! the caption, pardon my bad German, says 'langschwert', which is not actually 1:1 with longsword.
and it says it's a replica of bronze sword, and the original was from 800-1000 CE (which is outside the window for what most people would call a longsword).

whoah this is amazing. this is three longsword blades, without the hilts. look at the weird plantlike shape of the tang. were these disassembled and left with the rivets on to illustrate how they would be placed? did they decay like this? what a shape. i thought they used a straight tang.

I’m not practicing right now, but I trained English broadsword for about four years.

Zwiehander is fully two handed, larger than hand-and-a-half. Hand-and-a-half is also called bastard longsword bc "not quite" a longsword.

another name for 'longsword' is 'hand-and-a-half sword'. i wonder if 'arming sword', 'hand-and-a-half sword', and 'zwiehander' are all etymologically related? i can't actually seem to find a link in German names between the latter two, despite the similarity.

OK so not a hot take but an idea
Imagine a relatively short longsword / hand and a halfer
but the handle is normal on the top half
but the bottom half of the handle is a bunch of small pommels
So you can throw a dozen pommels at the guy, and still end up with basically a single handed arming sword

The way it's used in the movies they use it like a longsword so... light longsword?? But to begin with using a blade that literally weighs nothing with two hands makes no sense, if anything it SHOULD be used like a rapier

Swerving for the practical, Anduril from LotR (movies) looks like an actual, functional longsword. No oversized hilt, thick blade, nor a single cut-in or spike in sight. Just a bit of artistic flair you might have on a nice sword, with that awesome elvish engraving up the fuller.

It's not the default weapon - the Great Sword technically is, as its the first bladed weapon the game equips to you. The Longsword is the second "cutting" weapon. It seems every category (cutting, blunt, and piercing) are represented by two weapons.

Yeah but like having a more limited "deck". Like max 30 "moves" and it's your combat deck. Idea here is to have it correspond with you weapon.
Moves have a requirement. You won't be doing Destrezza spins with a Longsword or Uchigatana.
