QUICK FACTS Where is it? Chicago, Illinois What's in the photo? Ice swirling around the edge of Lake Michigan Which satellite took the photo? Landsat 8 When was it taken? Jan. 24, 2025 This striking satellite photo shows rippling ribbons of ethereal ice swirling like turbulent clouds on the surface of Lake Michigan, alongside a snow-covered Chicago. The wintery scene occurred during an extreme cold snap triggered by changes to the polar vortex, experts say.

Autre article intéressant, sur l'utilisation de données satellitaires par les US et grandes entreprises pour repérer des gisements à partir de la fin des années 1970. Là encore, montre l'importance des "minerais critiques" pour les policymakers étasuniens

In 1972, NASA launched Landsat 1, the first satellite dedicated to observing Earth’s surface. Its continuous images transformed environmental science, enabling long-term tracking of forests, cities, glaciers, and climate change from space. #ScienceHistory

Big milestone today: I integrated my satellite-based water quality models into the web app I built. I can now view and interact with the models in one place. Shown here: chlorophyll-a in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.

Nature carves colossal snowman in Siberia photo of the day for Jan. 2, 2026
On June 16, 2025, NASA's Landsat 8 satellite caught a chain of elongated, oval lagoons near Billings and Cape Billings on Russia's Chukchi Peninsula that lines up so perfectly that — when viewed from above — it resembles a stacked snowman pressed against the shore. Billings, established in the 1930s as a Soviet port and supply point, sits on a narrow spit of land separating the Arctic Ocean from connected coastal lagoons, exactly the kind of geomorphic "edge zone" where land, water, ice, and wind constantly reshape one another.

[ 1/31 ] 🧵

Time for yet another megathread of my favourite satellite pics.

This time I have 123 images processed by me in 2025 *.

Various dates, random places.

Most of them were taken by Sentinel-2, some by S-3 and one or two by Landsat.

*There's one more pic that isn't mine, but it's so good 😊

I worked on unmanned science spacecraft close enough in orbit not to need the Deep Space Network which are handled by JPL. My biggest was Hubble, but also COBE, Landsat, GOES, GRO, quite a list.
