Situated in the southern Andes Mountains, the Payún volcanic field of Argentina is a complex landscape that formed over hundreds of thousands of years. Sprawling over 5,200 square kilometers (2,000 square miles), Payún is a massive shield volcano—a broad formation resembling an ancient warrior shield. This false-color image is a composite of observations acquired on February 7 and March 20, 2001 by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus on the Landsat 7 satellite. It was made from a combination of visible and infrared light, where green indicates vegetation, black indicates lava flows, and orange is bare rock rich in iron oxides. Part of the back-arc volcanism of the Andes, Payún lies about 530 kilometers (330 miles) east from where the Nazca plate subducts below the South America plate. Not surprisingly, a volcanic zone extends over some 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) north-to-south in this region. According to a study published in 2010, the regional geology and chemical composition of the rocks indicate that the volcanic field likely formed within the past 300,000 years. The dominant feature of the volcanic field is Payún Matru, an elliptical caldera measuring roughly 9 by 7 kilometers (6 by 4 miles). Geologists surmise that the caldera formed after the old magma chamber emptied and the summit collapsed. The Larsen Ice Shelf is situated along the northeastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming places on the planet. In the past three decades, two large sections of the ice shelf (Larsen A and B) have collapsed. A third section (Larsen C) seems like it may be on a similar trajectory, with a new iceberg poised to break away soon. The mosaic above, centered on the northern part of Larsen Ice Shelf, is comprised of four natural-color satellite images captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on Jan. 6 and 8, 2016. It shows the remnant of Larsen B, along with the Larsen A and smaller embayments to the north covered by a much thinner layer of sea ice. The remaining shelf appears white with some deep rifts within it. Areas with sea ice anchored to the coastline or ice shelf—fast ice—are light blue where covered with melt water and white where covered by wind-blown snow. The ocean is dark, nearly black, where it is not covered by sea ice. The white areas near where glaciers meet the sea have multitudes of small icebergs called bergy bits that broke off from land ice. Megan Black, Prospecting the World: Landsat and the Search for Minerals in Space Age Globalization Extract In 1977 an American satellite, Landsat 2, helped Chevron Oil Company discover a vast petroleum reserve and set the stage for the first onshore oil well in Sudan. A joint venture of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) and the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Landsat program provided a planetary view of the earth and its natural resources. These satellites floated freely across national borders because of international agreements that allowed space-based objects to orbit in the upper atmosphere. Nations under surveillance could purchase Landsat program images from the U.S. government, often through the U.S. Agency for International Development (Usaid). Private companies, such as Chevron, could also purchase images, and did so. Chevron acquired images of Sudan as part of exploratory efforts that led to the discovery of 120,000 square miles of petroleum-rich land. The wells drilled in that area produced upward of 12,300 barrels per day for the oil company and helped catalyze a “black gold” rush in Sudan. In nations across the so-called Third World, similar economic and ecological transformations were underway, as U.S. government officials and private companies used Landsat images to identify untapped minerals and other natural resources under the auspices of international development. Third World leaders, in turn, debated the technology, with some offering support for the Landsat program and others charging that it constituted an “infringement on their own sovereign slice of earth.”

On June 16, 2025, NASA's Landsat 8 satellite caught a chain of elongated, oval lagoons near Billings and Cape Billings on Russia's Chukchi Peninsula that lines up so perfectly that — when viewed from above — it resembles a stacked snowman pressed against the shore. Billings, established in the 1930s as a Soviet port and supply point, sits on a narrow spit of land separating the Arctic Ocean from connected coastal lagoons, exactly the kind of geomorphic "edge zone" where land, water, ice, and wind constantly reshape one another.

I worked on unmanned science spacecraft close enough in orbit not to need the Deep Space Network which are handled by JPL. My biggest was Hubble, but also COBE, Landsat, GOES, GRO, quite a list.
