Relocation to Belarus of the Russian Oreshnik IRBM system "is nearing completion. We understand where it will be deployed. We are sharing this information with our partners. The partners themselves can assess this threat and understand how to respond to it.” - Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

The "Oreshnik" nuclear-capable IRBM likely has a range of 2,500-3,000 km (possibly as much as 5,500 km).

That puts more or less ALL of Europe within range.
Zelenskyy says Ukraine knows where Russia plans to deploy the “Oreshnik” missile system in Belarus and has shared the intel with allies.

He warns it could put countries like Poland and Germany within range, expanding the threat across Europe, and urges partners to respond, not stay silent.

Now factor in the flight time. For an IRBM we're talking about maybe 7-10 minutes. For a lofted (high trajectory) ICBM shot, up to 30 minutes. So the shortest feasible kill chain will have the warheads screaming down to target location at maybe t+15-20 minutes.

An IRBM could pack terminal homing capability - Pershing IIs had some. But they are also slower than ICBMs and thus much easier to intercept. And even with terminal homing, you need to get the warhead pretty close to the target - it's more for fine adjustment at those velocities.

intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) developed by Russia. It is considered a highly advanced weapon that can be equipped with conventional or nuclear warheads and has a range of up to 5,500 kilometers, making it potentially effective against targets throughout Europe.

9/n Putin’s IRBM strike on Ukraine’s Yuzhmash plant marks a chilling new phase: missiles that cannot be intercepted, striking at the heart of Ukraine’s defense industry. Moscow just made a massive statement: Europe is now within reach. 🌍🔴 #IRBM #RussianEscalation

The 'I' in ICBM stands for Intercontinental.

This is how non-ICBM this IRBM actually is.

According to Pierre Billaud, one of the physicians of the french nuclear program, the (pure fission) MR 31, which seems to be the weapon tested on the Bételgeuse test, and put in service on the IRBM force from 1971 to 1980, was "monstruously primitive", both in terms of safety and weight.

Spot on. I would not exclude the possibility of a Patriot PAC-3 downing an ICBM/IRBM, but it sure would be what the Americans call a "Hail Mary pass".

My point was just that Ukraine must defend itself against ballistic missiles in general - and Patriot remains the best system on the table for that.

I'm not going to speculate on what system Russia used. I would urge caution on jumping to conclusions (ICBM vs. IRBM, RS-26, etc.). Regardless, using such a system is likely for signaling rather than military purposes.

I’m seeing all sorts of reporting on this. First ICBM, then IRBM, then hypersonic missile, then hypersonic IRBM.

Best to let the weapons experts review the details it seems.

A bit more on 🇷🇺 IRBM missileattack:

"The missile delivered six re-entry vehicles, each splitting into half a dozen smaller submunitions that are reported to be iron rods. There appears to be limited damage on the ground despite the light show."

But mention IRBM & oh I know nothing argh I just want to annihilate these bstards killing woman & children as lads on the battlefield forced into defending their country. Cool people, beautiful people.
Andrei Kelin is this POS's name. Sky news good on them calling putin a pariah ! 💪🇺🇦 luv it.

Patriot's no good against IRBMs and ICBMs, their speed is too high. THAAD might work against the RS-26, but it looks a bit iffy. Best would be an Aegis Ashore installation, but that's going to take a few years.

in general, once ICBM is detected, it trigger global DEFCON response to every country, because everyone assume that ICBM will be Nuclear. The bigger issue is that it wasn't an ICBM but actually IRBM, which is banned since 1988 and both USA and Russia supposed to scrap them. Russia did not.
November 22, 2024 at 9:26 AM
looks like. Also missile he "tested" appears to be an IRBM (Intermediate-Range), not ICBM.
Under NPT (nuclear non proliferation treaty) they not even supposed to have these missiles since 1988 as were banned by INF treaty. They never fucking disarmed anything for almost 40 years, only lied about it
