The technology behind ILM's Volume is amazing, but overuse makes you spot it instantly because there is a feeling of sameness and the update frequency that makes it dip into uncanny valley but for sets rather than people.

I got to have a fun chat with Industrial Light & Magic visual effects supervisor David Seager about the truly stunning work for 'Tron: Ares'. Read it for free over at ILM's website. (Link in my bio!) ⬆️

I remember so little of that movie except ILM's FX work?

I wonder if Clint let them go home at 5 too?

2026 marks the 40th anniversary of Lucasfilm's Howard the Duck!

Among ILM's many visual effects contributions to the film was a partnership with filmmaker and stop-motion animator @philtippett.bsky.social to create the Dark Overlord.

This week, Ian Failes, author of Industrial Light & Magic: 50 Years of Innovation, visited ILM's San Francisco studio to sign some copies of the book.

Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone came out the same year as Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. And whooo boy, looking at the two 25 years later, Weta ate ILM’s fucking lunch.

Star Wars - The Phantom Menace (1999)

ILM's commercial for how good their cg looked for the time (except in the final 30 minutes). Utterly sauceless except for Duel of the Fates. Why did the podracing scene have no music for like 10 minutes. George Lucas should be put on trial for creating Jar Jar.

So much work for something that looks SO much worse than the original film (and really, most of ILM’s cartoonier ghosts are a huge step down from Boss VFX’s much nastier and more grounded ghost work on the first film).

[9of? 2025] Played ILM's demo of their new VR game "Beyond Victory" @ #SWCJ. Just got a Quest for xmas & that game's the 1st I've bought for it! Also proud of my friend @thescottjayro.bsky.social & this crowd for his "Midi-chlorians: An Alliance of Science, Mythology, & Magic" panel! I'd shop later.

The uncanniess of ILM's more rudimentary vfx really made the scenes spookier and cooler too!

This isn’t just a holiday card.

ILM’s 2025 artwork is a subtle nod to 50 years of shaping how movies look—without nostalgia overload.

dawg, you can actually watch the original version of ANH right now and see for yourself that ILM's work on it holds up tremendously well. Much better than the '97 CGI bullshit Lucas shoehorned in
