#greybox
I buy the story because I've heard about game executives at AAA studios who have NO Idea how video games are made and will refuse to sign off on placeholders or greybox because they expect fully-rendered finalized graphics even on alpha builds.

Still no excuse for using "AI" even as a placeholder.

...they do such a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to setting the tone and setting of a game, which can be projected onto a greybox world/characters.

Legitimately, where do these dudes *come from.* Are they all decanted off tubes in some lab? Is there a mediocre games industry manager broodmother in a cave somewhere who births them? What is the career progression to be a lead/director level studio worker who doesn't understand what a greybox is

a loud screetch emited from the box, making me step back from it.

The fair was gone,
everyone else was gone.

I was alone in a field, with a greybox

it might not sell well but I love this game I've made. sometimes I look at a level I'm making and go "woah that's a wild decision"

i think i have a fun idea for a little project "game" i could make in UE5 while i wait to really hit the job search after surgery... i even think it works better than my other ideas in terms of how feasibly i can prototype and greybox it, then build on it layer by layer and asset by asset

Me, starting the night.

"Let's go! Let's create a bird enemy"

* Makes windows breakable *

* Greybox THE corridor from RE1 *

* Implement a mean doggy to the game *

Alright, this was a pretty good night, I guess birds can wait :D

Myrne 6313 has now […]

also really glad I kept these progress shots

How is it easier to use an image generator than it is to google “newspaper stock photo” and hit copy and paste? How is it easier than just leaving it untextured greybox?

#devtober day 7, I've joined Pinuwuk's "Lil Guy" Game Jam as a break from the main project. Here's my lil guy! Working in the custom engine again, so I'm testing collision resolution & the ability to greybox a level

blocking out / outlining the level in cube grid in #UnrealEngine - I have a basic flow now but discovered some pacing where the beats I want the player to experience dont line up where I want them. also want to vary the elevation a bit #blocktober #gamedev

Another #knightsofguinevere M7 background that I had SOOO much fun with! 1 massive thank you to Nora Zerczy for the cg greybox I got to work off of, a 2nd massive thank you to AD @amberbladejones.bsky.social and @danaterrace.bsky.social for direction, and a 3rd massive thank you to @glitchprod.com!

When making Mario 64, Miyamoto refused to work on anything else before the movment felt good. Greybox prototyping was super important in getting this right! Charlie and I wrote a bit about that in our new blog.

Greybox Your Game
Greybox prototypes get something payable in front of a playtester without having to produce any new assets.

Done a quick go-over my greybox levels to add a palette to each of them. Looking extremely basic so far until the design is finalized, but the people testing seem to be enjoying playing it so far!

Note: I have like… 2 weeks left of the semester & my two big final projects are modeling related.

One is me just needing to retopologize a thing I sculpted...

The other is me having to model & detail out a greybox environment I made in Unity & put it back into Unity…

Fun times for me! TwT’

I told kasumi to keep the greybox, which... I actually find sort of disturbing. But I haven't done it in awhile. #masseffect2

While working on my card game in a physical capacity, I want to get it into more people's hands for testing/feedback.

Going to work on a simple greybox prototype in either Unity or Godot and will hopefully have that done in the next few months. :)

Gonna post updates here as I develop it!

Against my more primal urges, I've been making an effort to greybox the levels and enemies.
It hurts my soul a little tbh, but it really does feel like I'm saving a lot of time that I would have been spending, for example, redrawing the background layer each time I move a platform.

With modern engines, you can implement almost all your gameplay in greybox mode. That's where you figure out "is this fun?" And "how do we make this fun?"

If you skip that step, no amount of pretty art, or clever code, or polish will save you.

I've been living in greybox land for a while, feels good to get some art going and find this game's VIBES.

Literally, I made the greybox/orangemap based on my designs and then as soon as I was done, took a look at it all in context and went "No."

Entire map scrapped, restarted, and the current iteration, which DOESN'T FULLY FOLLOW MY REDONE LAYOUT BECAUSE WE ITERATED FURTHER ON THAT is feeling alright.
