There is no way in hell any of the Netflix/Gizmoplex writers for #MST3K would have an entire subplot of an episode revolve around Crow wanting to be, and then not be, the old Hollywood actor Jack Elam.

Too many L.A. people who don't know who Jack Elam was!

Yeah it did occur to me how the last time MST3K had a spinning globe was back in the Sci-Fi Channel era, the Netflix-Gizmoplex era had static globes. It is a nice detail to see again.
Ever wondered how the @mst3kofficial.bsky.social planet spins? Kevin is here to give you the inside scoop! rifftraxmakesmst3k.com

One of the biggest tragedies of the Gizmoplex stuff not panning out is Emily Marsh's Emily Connor, who debuted in MST3K's live shows, having now the distinction of the shortest tenure of any riffer. She did show she had the stuff, especially in Beyond Atlantis, but it was not an ideal season.

All I really want from a new series of MST3K is the return of nicely lit sets.

The Netflix/Gizmoplex "cardboard and plywood under fluorescent office lights" Era was a bit of a let down.

The recent news of Rifftrax/MST3k is kinda bittersweet for me. I’m not a huge fan of Mike Nelson, and I really liked the goofy sincerity of the Netflix/Gizmoplex seasons. A lot of Rifftrax content leaves me cold, and I’m worried it’s just gonna feel like more of the same.

Since we had other people voicing the bots during the Netflix and Gizmoplex seasons, for these new experiments, would it be okay to send Kevin banners that read, "I HATE Tom Servo's new voice?" #Rifftrax #MST3K
Why did Mike, Kevin and Bill come back to Mystery Science Theater 3000? Let the guys tell you themselves!

If they had started with the GIzmoplex idea, instead of saving it for a backup plan, they might've survived the diminishing of social media and so forth; as it was, they got the traditional two-seasons-and-fuck-you from Netflix, and tried to regroup on a lasting basis too late

First time he was like "I know not everyone will get this but I know the right people will."

Sweet at the time but now feels like emotional blackmail given how many times he returned to the well. Even after promising us once running Gizmoplex would be self funding.
February 4, 2026 at 7:38 AM
Is it wrong I trust the Rifftrax MST3K crowfunder to have a swift turnover? Not like Joel hiring a PR person for Gizmoplex who was repeatedly like "Hi guys! No rewards yet again but give us money for this side project!"?

In making sure I have all of my MST3K episodes downloaded from the Gizmoplex (after their recent domain adventures), I realized I'd never bought Rocketship X-M after they released it. Fixed that today. (And yes, I did have everything else downloaded.)

2/2 it was hard fo follow if you didn't have Gizmoplex and only saw those episodes on the MST3K Turkey Day Marathon. I'm betting Trace comes back for an episode and Felicia Day does as well, for an episode, but could be wrong.
February 3, 2026 at 6:28 PM
I am betting what's happening, is the first 4 episodes are guaranteed, while the kickstarter will fund a full season, so they can go "Surprise!" New full season. Joel's problem was Gizmoplex was way too expensive, and then when they bounced between hosts 1/2
February 3, 2026 at 6:26 PM
Me too. I thought the Netflix/Gizmoplex MST3K was uneven. It was over-produced, losing the cheap vibe that made the show special. If these new ones could get Trace & Frank back as Dr. Forrester & TV's Frank, that would be the greatest.

It DOES feel more than a little like "We need new product *NOW* and figuring out whether to continue the Gizmoplex-era is a bunch of actor/writer contracts to work out versus 'just have RiffTrax's crew play/voice their parts again' as a quick(er) fix that could go longer if it works."
February 3, 2026 at 5:11 AM
But I'm starting to think its about the narrative. Joel/Gizmoplex MST3K, with all its new stuff, struggles, putting Shout in a position to acquire the brand. Shout doesn't fund MST3K, buys it out from Joel, THEN funds it. Sell a new version through Rifftrax as a retro throwback. Sci-Fi Era is back!

There are so many movies that are unwatchable on MST3k just because of the low quality prints they use.

So while it looks like the larger budget of the Gizmoplex era hurt them, I do worry that the 20k budget for four episodes is far too low.
February 3, 2026 at 4:49 AM
Honestly while I very much enjoyed the Gizmoplex Era and I'm not the biggest Scifi Era fan, I do think that the lower budget return is a better idea than glossy sets and known talent.

But one of the things they DID use the money for was better quality prints of the films and thank god for that.

Cut to less than three weeks later. Mike Nelson, who kept pretty arms length from MST3K during the Gizmoplex era, and Rifftrax announce this partnership with Shout and launch the new Kickstarter. No list of movies, no writers room credits, no guest stars, no stretch goals.
February 3, 2026 at 4:44 AM
One could assume that Shout opted not to cover Joel and the Gizmoplex, but that's behind closed doors, I don't know. What I do know is that the Gizmoplex era was about newer talent and a new art style in front of the camera. Opinions on the era regardless, if was trying to have its own identity.

I'm sad that I didn't hear about the Gizmoplex until it was effectively done so I couldn't sign up for it to support it. I'd thought news of that kind of thing would've trickled to me one way or another, but alas, 'twas not so.

Loved the revival of MST3K through Netflix. Loved the Gizmoplex season. And I am more than happy to love my comfort cast of the show returning for even more than a single episode. Donate if you can, spread the word if you can not.

You can't kill this show and I am so happy for it.

Also, with Rifftrax appearing on the Gizmoplex, I can’t imagine this being a reset. It is just another satellite. I wonder if this explains the time travel at the end of season 13….
February 3, 2026 at 3:26 AM
Nah, Season 13 (Gizmoplex) is one of the strongest seasons of the entire run. Give it a chance.
February 3, 2026 at 3:18 AM
Has to be better than the awkward mix of LA writers the Netflix/Gizmoplex seasons used.
