A brutal reminder from this week’s Quackwatch Digest that medical misinformation kills.

Freebirth propaganda. Extremist diets. Toxic “natural” products. All thriving in an ecosystem that rewards confidence over evidence.

The Freebirth movement takes something reasonable (those giving childbirth ought to have agency in their birth and that they should have the right to request or deny procedures) and then goes to Quack Town (any medical intervention is BAD!!!1)

These “freebirth” influencers are evil. Also, the fact that this dangerous woo woo shit is taking hold across many countries with a variety of health care systems makes me skeptical of explanations that blame it on the American healthcare system.

My daughter used to be an L&D nurse and that situation always terrified her as a nurse. Luckily they are trained to handle it and her unit never lost a patient, at least in her years (I'm not implying it was because of her! Just not certain of the history!). Yeah these freebirth people are nuts.

My healthy daughter just had a baby, and unexpectedly hemorrhaged badly, requiring immediate surgery and transfusions to save her life. A “freebirth” would have likely resulted in her death. Why would any one risk their life when they do not have to?

These freebirth nuts are really something. Go to an old cemetery or church records and see how many women died in childbirth (mother and baby buried together). My own grandmother did, back in 1928.

I keep seeing anti-vaxxers, freebirth advocates, etc., be like, “Well, what did babies do before modern medicine, then?!”
