Our story: Conall Maguire's first encounter with the ship Octavia outside the Derry walls. He is desperate to get aboard, believing Warwick is holding Bella, Hannah, and Aibreán against their will.
He lacks a plan otherwise.

Maguire trudged out the Shipquay Gate, past the chandlers’ warehouses and into the forest of tall vessels crowding the Foyle. The Pribaltica wagons stood along a loading dock on Pier Three beside an elegant three-masted vessel, its fat, forest-green hull bulging at the waterline. Two broad yellow-ocher stripes ran the ship’s length. Furled bone-white sails wrapped the tapered black yards, stark against the yellow masts, and a gaping gangway port exposed bare grey decking bordered by a bright red bulwark. Draymen and stevedores hoisted crates and barrels with a deck crane aft of the foremast, easing each load over the gunwale and into an open hatch. Men loitered on the pier. Others fitted a gangway. Maguire scanned their faces in vain for Tim Foley. Two men rolled an empty barrel down the gangway, a third followed with stool and a ledger. Conall joined the gathering around the makeshift table. The man on the stool opened the ledger. “Now hear ye! Master Jonas Skirling is hiring to round out his crew—ten seamen, ten landsmen—and to sea on the morrow. Give your name, age, birthdate, place, quality, the ship ye last served.” A short man with a bristly beard and a well-bottom voice added, “Mura bhfuil Béarla agat, ní bhfaighidh tú aon obair.” If you have no English, you won’t get work. The announcement turned many away. The first man resumed. “Ports of call: Belfast, Bristol, Saint-Nazaire, Gibraltar, and Mediterranean ports. Experienced seamen get twenty-one shilling a month. Ordinary—eighteen. Landsmen—sixteen. Prefer coopers and carpenters. Landsmen must learn the ropes. Each physick for Lover’s Pox stops out fifteen shilling, smaller for clothing and rations. Full payment in late August. Final crew selections at sunrise on the morrow.” If Maguire failed to confirm his suspicions, he could slip off in Belfast. “Next?” Conall spoke his most precise English. “Whalen—Peter Whalen.” “Birthplace and date?” “Tyrconnell. Thirty-two.” The man huffed. “Date.” “Twentieth of March, 1784.” “Ship?” “Never at sea—but strong in labor, sir.” Conall’s heart pounded. The man scribbled in the ledger. “Next!” Maguire strolled the vessel’s length, estimating nearly a hundred fifty feet. A carved white figurehead dawdled on the prow—salt-washed wooden arms raised as if to support the heavy bowsprit with its gammoning, dolphin striker, martingale, and jibboom. Sculpted coils of hair flowed over her weathered shoulders, her bare breasts shorn of nipples. Behind her, high on the cutwater, a carved trail board read OCTAVIA, green on yellow ochre. Next, the cathead, a heavy black timber crane jutting from the smooth, carvel-built hull, supporting a ponderous bower anchor. To an untrained eye, the three masts rose through an oppressive jungle of hemp and manila rope. The triangular geometry of tarred shrouds supported the masts, raw-hemp ratlines strung like ladders between them. A clinker-built cockboat dangled from lines on the yards. Maguire counted twelve gunports along the hull and climbed a short ladder onto a loading dock, a suitable belvedere to see over the gunwales. On the forecastle, two chaser guns on red carriages. A brass bell hung in a red belfry between the foremast and a windlass and crane, a complex system of ropes and tackle for lowering cargo into the large hatch along the centerline. Ventilation gratings were off. Steep companion ladders descended into the hatch from both sides of the weather deck, and a sizeable flat-bottom barge stood on its gunwales against the starboard bulwark. An oppressive quantity of coiled rope draped the belaying pins on fife rails fore and aft of the mainmast. Further aft, a capstan—the top of a multistory winch—used to hoist the ship’s curved-arm anchors. Behind it, another companionway burrowed deep into the vessel’s bowels. The deck ascended toward the mizzenmast. Steps led to a raised quarterdeck, where storm canvas tented the ship’s wheel between catwalks up to the poop deck and taffrail, the ornate balustrade at the stern. Paned gallery windows wrapped around a bulging stern, tapering to a short row of portholes extending forward. A solid blue banner with a centered white rectangle flew from the mainmast. Impatient, Conall descended. A pair of furtive men blocked him at the ladder’s foot—Khubúlov, broad-shouldered, stalwart as a bollard, and another sallow, shaven with greasy black hair and the predatory gape of a ling. Khubúlov glared, taking in Conall’s face, his clothes, the way he carried himself. Fishmouth broke the silence. “Vot you vant?” Maguire tensed. “Work.” “Blyád’.” Recognition. Khubúlov’s eyes narrowed to slits. “Tam, u skláda vídyel. S pyánitsei gulyál nedyélyu nazád.” Fishmouth frowned, reassessing Maguire. “You on leest?” “Aye, looking for work,” Conall said. “Name?” “Peter Whalen.” Fishmouth squinted with hostility. “Go. Tomorrow for vork.” Maguire snapped a nod and exhaled. One step closer.

The story is set on a small urban island call Fishmouth where ghostly fish are manifestation of dreams and longings ( the eyeball are hallucinogenic 👍). The entire island culture & livelihood is built on poaching those fish but then it got banned :p , so things r shady rn

The relationships people have with scenes from Rob Reiner movies are not easy to create. You can market the heck out of a movie, you can pull all the levers you have, and you can capitalize on every advantage you can come up with. But you can't make anybody absorb "baby fishmouth" or "as you wish"; you can't make anybody say "these go to 11" every time they see the number 11 anywhere. You can't buy that for any amount of money. It's magical how much you can't; it's kind of beautiful how much you can't. Box office and streaming numbers might be phony or manipulated or fleeting, but when the thing hits, people attach to it or they don't.
