He knows he stares too much at that sharp face, that he’s hanging on every slurred vowel of the voice rushing through sentences like there’s only one breath allowed per speech. It’s a touch deeper and mellowed with the passage of time—so much time, too much time—enough that maybe this isn’t who he thinks. He needs to listen closely to process the changes. And he doesn’t dare look away and miss something. Anything. Details. It can’t be him. Logic doesn’t stop him from crawling closer. From screaming the name lodged in his throat, that he has to say before he can’t breathe around it. It can’t be him. A single brush of fingers against his shatters his denial. The touch takes him back as though no time at all has passed, and his magic, his instincts—minimal as they are compared to a shifter—his everything seems to take flight. Within him, his magic surges and detonates, tearing through the barrier like tissue, and he knows. It can only be him. He couldn’t keep the name inside if he tried, and gods know he doesn’t want to try. “Hongjoong?” He knows immediately that he should have tried. Because Hongjoong looks at him with a spark of startled fear, maybe a hint of suspicion, and… nothing else.

I am legit almost in tears with all the encouraging love we are all giving each other in the #FicYourFall threads. The way I have really found a home in ARMY and in these fic humans who have helped me regain my love for making words? I can't even explain it. ARMY really is the greatest gift.

Remember, #FicYourFall is meant to be low pressure. If you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, set smaller goals for yourself. Take a break for the weekend and come back next week with one small, achievable goal.

EXCERPT: “How about a name, hm? Or are you gatekeeping that one?” The man’s gaze darts toward San at the question, suspicion and fear bright in his odd, silver eyes. San holds his hands up in surrender. “It doesn’t have to be your name,” he says easily. “Just something you’re comfortable with us calling you. Since you clearly don’t like ahjussi.” The man’s face is oddly expressive, despite all of the hair and dirt obscuring it. His eyes roll, but he clearly contemplates the idea before writing out, Bait – that’s what they call me. “Bait. You mean like… a lure?” San asks with a scrunch of his nose. “Something used to—to catch something else? That kind of bait?” Hongjoong can’t help the disgusted look he shoots San’s way. He sees his unease reflected in San’s dark eyes. What kind of dehumanizing— The man taps the paper. That’s what they call me. “Okay, but you want us to call you that?” Hongjoong asks, because he can’t find it in himself to agree to that at all. Screw that. There’s just no way Left Eye didn’t know about Bait. No way that he wasn’t up to his eyeballs in whatever led to this poor man being locked up down here. The old man’s lucky he’s dead right now, or— Hongjoong takes a steadying breath and sits down on the floor, just beyond the edge of the circle. “No objection from me,” he says gently, “if you want to be called literally anything else.”
