“You said you’d try to meet me here.” Jongho’s words aren’t an accusation, though they cut like one. Instead, there are tears in his eyes that he blinks away, his jaw tensed. “You tried, didn’t you.” It isn’t a question, but Seonghwa answers him anyway. “I did.” Jongho nods, his gaze darting away. “Most of the time, I was mad at you for lying to me.” He clears his throat. Sniffs. “Because that’s what I thought. That the only reason you wouldn’t come was because you’d never intended to. That you just said whatever bullshit to make me feel good enough to leave you behind.” “I understand,” Seonghwa murmurs. “But then there was the rest of the time,” Jongho says. “The days when I was just sure you were dead. And that was the reason you hadn’t come.” He hates that those are the logical options. “Do you—I mean, I could—I could make you forget me.” The offer claws its way out of Seonghwa. “If… you’d rather. You could start fresh with me.” Jongho’s wide eyes lock on him, his lips parted in soundless shock. “It’s what I was supposed to do,” Seonghwa goes on. “Back then, I mean. I—that’s what they train. Just rip all the horror and pain and trauma out like they’re weeds. You still know some of it, just not enough to lose sleep over.” “And not enough to know the person who saved me when I see them,” Jongho adds. “Right.” “Holy shit.” Jongho’s tears fade, replaced by an almost fervent gleam that should maybe scare the shit out of Seonghwa. “Holy shit.” Seonghwa swallows around the sudden dryness in his throat. “That’s what happened to Hongjoongie-hyung,” he says. “Isn’t it? What happened to his parents and brother—it sounds so much like what I experienced. Only he doesn’t remember the how or the who. Gods above, those are the two pieces I will never forget.” Yeah, fuck. He should have known Jongho would piece that together. “Someone went into his fucking head and weeded it.” Jongho shudders. “The official term is cleaned.” Seonghwa can’t help a humorless huff. “Of course there’s an ‘official’ term.” Jongho grimaces. “You did tell me your bosses suck.” “Jongho-ssi…” He gets a raised eyebrow in response, though whether at the formality or the pause is anyone’s guess. But Jongho is maybe the only person who will understand the implications of, “The valley has a bit of a… spirit problem.” Jongho sucks in a sharp breath. “I don’t suppose you know anything about that, do you?”

“Do I… know you?” Seonghwa glances up, spoonful of broth halfway to his mouth. Wooyoung has waited until they were alone to ask, and Seonghwa’s stomach flutters uneasily. He sets the spoon in the bowl and licks his lips. Is he uncertain? Curious? Terrified? Some nauseating jumble of all three, maybe? “How?” Seonghwa asks, and not only because Wooyoung should not in any way know him. “I dunno. There’s just something…” Wooyoung trails off, making a swirling motion around his own face. “Something familiar, I guess.” Seonghwa’s heart pounds. ‘Do you know the things you will do, boy? I wish I didn’t.’ This can’t be it, can it? Seonghwa hasn’t been anywhere to cause trouble yet, so how can a total stranger believe he knows him? Wooyoung snaps his fingers, startling Seonghwa as he leans in like he’s about to spill some big secret. “We’ve kissed, right?” Seonghwa chokes. “Excuse me?” “High school, maybe? A little action behind the bleachers? No, wait.” Wooyoung looks at him contemplatively. “Backstage, maybe. Yeah, you look more like the stage type.” Seonghwa’s lips part and move, but nothing intelligible comes out. He’s sitting here expecting doom and Wooyoung is asking if they’ve kissed? “Back in the day,” Wooyoung goes on, “before I got mated, of course—anyway, I made it my business to kiss all the prettiest boys. And you?” Wooyoung makes an appreciative sound. “Yeah, you are so fucking pretty, my guy.” Seonghwa’s cheeks heat as he stares at Wooyoung, his eyes so wide they feel like they might fall out. “No,” Seonghwa finally manages. “No?” Wooyoung’s brows draw close as he taps his own lips, and Seonghwa really can’t be held responsible for following the movement, right? “No, you aren’t pretty? Or, no—” “No kissing.” Wooyoung gasps. “You aren’t a boy kisser? I did not see that coming, because—and believe me, this is the highest of compliments in my book—you look like a top-tier boy kisser.” Wooyoung gestures vaguely at all of Seonghwa. “Is it a moral objection? No? I kinda want to kiss you right now, what with the whole pretty thing, and you’ve got this aura, you know?” Seonghwa does not know. “Damn, but I just want to bite your lips. Not too hard. Just a little. Nom on them a tiny bit. And that’s not even counting the whole déjà vu thing—” Seonghwa’s head is spinning. “You’re sure we haven’t kissed?” “Yes.” Seonghwa’s voice sounds like it’s been ground up over gravel. “Huh.” Wooyoung huffs. “Might have to fix that.”

wip wednesday! idk, is this anything? i wrote it for my ufo chaser fic, but it doesn't quite suit the tone/character vibes for that one, so i might save it for something else U•ェ•U
"Wait… is that what this is?" Yunho asks, baffled. "You're jealous?" "Chronically," Wooyoung mumbles before breaking into a string of curses, frustrated and embarrassed at having been caught out, still itching for a fight even though he knows he's deeply in the wrong. "Of Seonghwa-hyung?! Jesus Christ, Wooyoung, he was…" There's a quivering edge to Yunho's voice. "Tell me who to fight," he gestures around the empty street, right hand swollen, bruising. "Fuck, I'll get in fist fights for you all night long." He sounds pissed off, but his eyes are pleading, so earnest. It takes the wind right out of Wooyoung's sails. "Aish, I don't… I don't need you to," he says, kicking awkwardly at the wall behind him, feeling sheepish, anger gone as quickly as it came. "I'm sorry. That wasn't fair, it's not like you owe me anything." Yunho is suddenly right up in his space, eyes boring down into him. "I don't owe you, but I'd give you anything you want," he says, voice hard. "Did you not know that?" Wooyoung's tongue which has gotten him in trouble all night lays thick and silent in his mouth. All he can do is stare up at Yunho and try to decipher all the emotions flashing in his eyes. Yunho shoves weakly at his chest - it's without any heat, but just enough to make Wooyoung's back connect to the brick wall. "You're jealous?" He's so close now, Wooyoung can feel the frustrated heat radiating off his body. "Maybe I haven't made it as clear as I thought, trailing after you like a lovesick puppy," Yunho continues, voice lower, rougher. "You're all I fucking think about, Wooyoung."

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen these pictures before.” The living room is dark, only the glow of the monitor flickering and changing as Mingi scrolls through the gallery. He stops on one and glances sideways at Yunho, sitting half-a-Hongjoong away on the couch. “What are you thinking over there?” Yunho shrugs, only one shoulder committing to the movement. “So you hate them, too.” Mingi offers a sheepish smile. “No, it’s just—I mean—” Yunho scrubs his hands over his face. “Just?” “Fuck.” Yunho surges up from the couch, pacing back and forth in front of it. “We know he had a life before he came to the valley.” “We do,” Mingi agrees with a nod. “But there’s ‘knowing’ in the abstract,” Yunho says, “and then there’s—” He waves at the laptop. “That. This. Evidence. Proof of who he was before us, and—and he’s—” “Happy.” Mingi’s own smile feels sad and foolish. Not that he doesn’t want Hongjoong to be happy. He does. It’s just— “Happier than he does with us.” Yunho stops. Frozen. He stares at Mingi with wide eyes, his bottom lip between his teeth. “I just—I don’t get it.” Yunho inhales sharply. “He’s not even close to anyone in the pics. I mean, look at him. He’s off to the side in every single one.” “He’s prickly about being touched,” Mingi says, even as he studies the pictures. “Not with us,” Yunho insists. “Not with people who make him that… happy.” Yunho slumps back down on the couch, this time squeezed up against Mingi’s side. He stabs a finger at the screen. “Just look at him,” Yunho mutters. “All smiles and goofy poses.” Mingi cocks his head, staring at the image. His pose is kind of goofy. “It almost looks like someone else should be there.” Mingi clicks on the next picture and sees the same gap, the same quirky pose, like— “It’s like he had his arm around someone,” Yunho says, and Mingi can hear his cop brain engage. He points to Hongjoong’s hand, just out in space beside him. “Or a hand on their back.” “If someone was there, the gap between him and the next person makes sense.” Mingi clicks through a few more images. They’re all the same, and it’s starting to creep him out. “Maybe someone was supposed to be?” Yunho suggests. “You know how teams and groups do when someone can’t be there?” “Yeah, but do they hold the empty spot?” Mingi points at Hongjoong’s hand, curled around air. “Someone… was there.” “Someone Joongie-hyung was pretty fucking close to,” Mingi says. “Wouldn’t he tell us?” Yunho leans away enough to look at Mingi. “He would tell us, right?” “I dunno.” Mingi shrugs. “Why wouldn’t he?” Yunho’s voice is no more than an anguished whisper now. Mingi has to look at this logically. Rationally. Hongjoong isn’t the easiest person to talk to, but he’s also never been one to hide things that really matter. They know about his childhood in Soul, his parents’ death, his uneven relationship with his brother. Fuck, they know about his first love and his first lover. “Maybe it’s like…” Mingi stares at that gap, looking for any flaw, any irregularity that would give away some kind of editing or manipulation. “How do you introduce someone who isn’t there and not look crazy?”

The offices of the Valley Chronicle are more like suggestions of confidentiality, with a collection of cubicle walls in random sizes and colors serving to block off sections for the editor, two reporters, and whatever else people do here. Hongjoong doesn’t know. Doesn’t really care, either. He’s here for one person only. He slides into Yeosang’s cubicle… thing and claims one of the two empty chairs in front of his desk. Yeosang’s eyes shift from his monitor screen to Hongjoong and back again. His fingers fly across the keyboard, and he says nothing until he finishes typing. Then he leans back in his chair and sighs. One eyebrow rises in silent question. Hongjoong’s grin makes Yeosang’s cheeks go pink. “Yah, Kim Hongjoong.” Yeosang crosses his arms and glares. As hard as he can. “That’s Kim Hongjoong-hyung,” Hongjoong says. Yeosang sucks in a breath through his teeth. He looks so pretty when he’s flustered. Hongjoong has half a mind to test the “privacy” of this cubicle. “Stop flirting,” Yeosang huffs. “It’s working hours.” “Well, you might be working,” Hongjoong says. “I can’t lie, though. I’m on lunch.” “And that brings you here… why?” “Best view in town,” Hongjoong says. “What view?” “My stunning mate-to-be,” Hongjoong says. “All blushy and mildly pissed.” “Hyung.” Yeosang nearly bites the word in half. “Yeah, just like that.” Hongjoong chuckles. “Gets me all riled up.” “Oh, bite me,” Yeosang grits out through his teeth. “With pleasure.” Hongjoong stands and rounds the desk, drinking in the way Yeosang’s eyes go wide. “Yah, yah, yah,” Yeosang hisses. He spins in his chair, lifting his hands in self-defense. “I did not mean that literally, Hyung. What the fuck.” “Can’t blame a man for being impatient to claim you, jagiya.” Hongjoong straddles his thighs and sits down. He leans in close, loving the shaky exhale of Yeosang’s breath, the way his hands flutter around Hongjoong’s waist before clamping down hard. “Full moon’s coming.” “It’s still a week out. Quit acting like a moondrunk fool,” Yeosang mutters. “Get off me.” “You’re the one holding on like I might try to escape.” Hongjoong scrapes his teeth over Yeosang’s thumping pulse. “Shove you onto the floor, maybe.” Hongjoong’s giggle is a little bit mad. “We can play rough,” he whispers against Yeosang’s ear. His teeth close around the tender earlobe, tongue flicking the silver piercings. Yeosang lets out a shivery moan that Hongjoong only barely hears over the dull roar of the office around them. “I’ll make you submit.” A full body shudder rips through Yeosang. “Just the way you like it,” Hongjoong promises.

His throat goes dry. He’s been stood up at this bar too many times not to know that deep, raspy voice. He shivers as warmth spreads along his back, tall enough to cast a shadow over him. He risks a look over his shoulder. Something hungry coils inside him at the look of blatant appreciation on Mingi’s face. “You never call me by my name.” Mingi’s hand skims his cheek, gentle, yet… possessive. Like he’s staking a claim. “Do I need to?” Yeosang asks coolly. Wooyoung lets loose a startling bark of laughter. Then he sets Yeosang’s fresh drink down. He catches Yeosang’s fingers around the glass, and now he’s caught between them. “Hm,” Mingi hums. “At least when we’re making you come.” “Whoever you’re always waiting for, gorgeous,” Wooyoung murmurs, “let us take his place tonight.”

Warm fingers touch his cheek. “Are you with us, starlight?” Seonghwa blinks slowly at him, earning a soft, dimpled smile. “We need to move, San-ah,” Wooyoung says. San. That’s the face above him. “I’ll move him when I’m sure we won’t hurt him more,” San says, his gentle expression shifting into something fierce. There’s so much anger and fear, and Seonghwa can’t stop the tears that spill over. San is quick to focus on him, his thumbs gently swiping the tears away. “Don’t cry, love,” he whispers. “We’ve got you.”
