Yeosang stares at the glass with nothing left in it but ice and wasted time. He drags his fingers through the condensation. The clock on the bar wall shows his boyfriend is late. Again. Always. “Another soda, Yeosang-ssi?” The bartender—Wooyoung—slides up with a smirk that promises sin. He’s handsome. Maybe just the right flavor of dangerous. “Or something stronger?” “Just the soda, Wooyoung-ssi,” Yeosang says, nudging the glass toward Wooyoung. “Oh, now, that’s not fair,” he hears over the spray of the soda gun. His throat goes dry. He’s been stood up at this bar too many times not to know that deep, raspy voice. He shivers as warmth spreads along his back, tall enough to cast a shadow over him. He risks a look over his shoulder. Something hungry coils inside him at the look of blatant appreciation on Mingi’s face. “You never call me by my name.” Mingi’s hand skims his cheek, gentle, yet… possessive. Like he’s staking a claim. “Do I need to?” Yeosang asks coolly. Wooyoung lets loose a startling bark of laughter. Then he sets Yeosang’s fresh drink down. He catches Yeosang’s fingers around the glass, and now he’s caught between them. “Hm,” Mingi hums. “At least when we’re making you come.” “Whoever you’re always waiting for, gorgeous,” Wooyoung murmurs, “let us take his place tonight.”

“Get up. You have to get up.” Hands that are too anxious to be gentle match the voice cutting through the haze. The grip on his arms bruises in its urgency, turning him to his back whether he cooperates or not. “You’ve got him, Wooyoung-ah?” another voice asks. “Does it look like I’ve got him?” Wooyoung’s voice is fractured by fear, hitching and uneven. “He’s half dead, maybe more.” Seonghwa forces his eyes open, blinking the world into focus. Above him, broken moonlight filters through leafless branches. Voices swirl around him. He knows them but can’t find his voice to call out. “Hyung. Hyung, can you hear me?” The moon is eclipsed by a familiar face with cat eyes and a jaw that could cut like glass. Warm fingers touch his cheek. “Are you with us, starlight?” Seonghwa blinks slowly at him, earning a soft, dimpled smile. “We need to move, San-ah,” Wooyoung says. San. That’s the face above him. “I’ll move him when I’m sure we won’t hurt him more,” San says, his gentle expression shifting into something fierce. There’s so much anger and fear, and Seonghwa can’t stop the tears that spill over. San is quick to focus on him, his thumbs gently swiping the tears away. “Don’t cry, love,” he whispers. “We’ve got you.”

He knows he stares too much at that sharp face, that he’s hanging on every slurred vowel of the voice rushing through sentences like there’s only one breath allowed per speech. It’s a touch deeper and mellowed with the passage of time—so much time, too much time—enough that maybe this isn’t who he thinks. He needs to listen closely to process the changes. And he doesn’t dare look away and miss something. Anything. Details. It can’t be him. Logic doesn’t stop him from crawling closer. From screaming the name lodged in his throat, that he has to say before he can’t breathe around it. It can’t be him. A single brush of fingers against his shatters his denial. The touch takes him back as though no time at all has passed, and his magic, his instincts—minimal as they are compared to a shifter—his everything seems to take flight. Within him, his magic surges and detonates, tearing through the barrier like tissue, and he knows. It can only be him. He couldn’t keep the name inside if he tried, and gods know he doesn’t want to try. “Hongjoong?” He knows immediately that he should have tried. Because Hongjoong looks at him with a spark of startled fear, maybe a hint of suspicion, and… nothing else.

EXCERPT: “How about a name, hm? Or are you gatekeeping that one?” The man’s gaze darts toward San at the question, suspicion and fear bright in his odd, silver eyes. San holds his hands up in surrender. “It doesn’t have to be your name,” he says easily. “Just something you’re comfortable with us calling you. Since you clearly don’t like ahjussi.” The man’s face is oddly expressive, despite all of the hair and dirt obscuring it. His eyes roll, but he clearly contemplates the idea before writing out, Bait – that’s what they call me. “Bait. You mean like… a lure?” San asks with a scrunch of his nose. “Something used to—to catch something else? That kind of bait?” Hongjoong can’t help the disgusted look he shoots San’s way. He sees his unease reflected in San’s dark eyes. What kind of dehumanizing— The man taps the paper. That’s what they call me. “Okay, but you want us to call you that?” Hongjoong asks, because he can’t find it in himself to agree to that at all. Screw that. There’s just no way Left Eye didn’t know about Bait. No way that he wasn’t up to his eyeballs in whatever led to this poor man being locked up down here. The old man’s lucky he’s dead right now, or— Hongjoong takes a steadying breath and sits down on the floor, just beyond the edge of the circle. “No objection from me,” he says gently, “if you want to be called literally anything else.”
