Standing 8 feet tall in the churchyard of St Lawrence’s, Eyam’s Celtic Cross is a Grade I listed rare survivor from the Anglo-Saxon (Mercian) period, dating to the 8th or 9th century. Originally, it would have towered around 10 feet as a wayside preaching cross on the moors west of the village, set up by missionaries from the north. Time and mishaps have reduced its height, but its carved shaft and cross-head remain remarkably intact. In the 18th century, the cross was discovered beside a trackway on the moors and relocated to the churchyard, where it spent many years neglected in a corner. Today it has been restored and stands proudly for visitors to admire. The west face is particularly striking. Rich Mercian-style interlacing runs up the shaft, while human figures (likely St Mary with the baby Jesus, angels, and Christ in glory) occupy panels near the top. It is said to be the only cross of its type in the Midlands that still retains its original cross-head. For anyone walking through Eyam, the cross is a tangible connection to the village’s earliest Christian heritage.
