My writing is really experimental in my new book. I'm nervous and feel vulnerable about it. I'm even getting a bit philosophical. Sometimes I panic and think about throwing it all out and retreating to more formal academic prose.

But then I think, fuck it - we only live once. Put it all out there.

I enjoy writing poetry in a variety of styles, from meditative/introspective, lyrical, and classical (metrical, blank verse, formal, as in sonnets, tanka, haiku) to ecopoetry/nature-oriented and experimental works, which can include prose poems, concrete/visual poems.

Experimental Ink I was an artist dying inside a box. They told me, they said, get yourself that corporate money. Go’on, now. You deserve it. You should have an hour-long drag to work, on a good day. Surround yourself with people you’re not very fond of, for reasons not entirely their fault. Slam on your dad-blue jeans and gingham button down shirt, the one that still smells like someone else’s Armani from last year’s Christmas party, the one that sits entombed in your closet, waiting like a spirit to curse the rest of your surrendered life. Be the man’s man with tonic in hand. No, make it a whiskey, a double. Neat. You’ll want cigars and football tickets with that, and to forget about art for a while. Your art. Ignore the way things are shaping out, and disregard the colors, the cool gray blue shadow beneath hostile and rosy cheeks that drowns the heart. Drop your music full of grace. Scale back your writing to a dispatch and a micro-post. Practice twitter craft and rotten poetry. Apply for that new position where you stand all day for nothing. Wrap yourself in Amazon packaging and kneel before another rich man’s totem. Now beg for more. Beg for it. Get in. Get in the box and grovel. Get in and die. Rage against the opinions of others. You will never know who you are, they said, they told me, until you are half way through the side door, looking back, wishing you had done more of the other things. That was you, with wonder in your eyes, when the light of day moved you on, fueled your hunger, when you saw clear as blue who you wanted to be. And that sure as hell wasn't no artist dying in no box.

I went to undergraduate creative writing workshops with people who wrote better experimental prose than this.

This is like a bad parody of a Humphrey Bogart character. Does she stare between closed blinds and stare pensively at neon signs? Is she starting a private detective agency?

Atypical Haibun For this project I've been trying not to do the same experimental form type twice, yet as I eat my peanut butter sandwich and it lays on my knee half finished, scrolling Bluesky and seeing friends enjoying writing haibuns I ponder. Thinking of what Florence said about sacrifices for art, the pain we endure, hoping this project will resolve it, yet completing and finding not necessarily. Bite of sandwich. Formally speaking, a haibun isn't supposed to use the word "I" in its similarities to the haiku, with focus on nature. Yet, aren't we nature? Isn't the Internet age still nature? I guess the point is to be mindful. What are definitions anyway. Another bite of peanut butter and jelly contemplating us

Yes, me, hence my identifying symbol on the spine. It was something I was writing circa 1983/84, very Ballard/New Worlds-influenced "experimental" prose. Not remotely publishable but I put it on Blake's shelf as a kind of goodbye to that period of work.

in general i end up reading a lot of pulp fiction & experimental lit, and in the past couple years my non-experimental taste in literary prose has wandered towards spare, simple styles, like brian evenson has, for example. but this has led me to neglect the style of writing i like best!
