Winterizing our Japanese Maple from raked the fallen leaves, packed them into a plastic bag, then snugly between the tree trunk and the container. Creating an extra layer of insulation to protect the roots from deep cold and wind. Simple, natural protection for a strong spring return. oneLove 🍁🌱

It was my first time growing sweet potatoes and it was quite the learning experience. Rabbits eating the vines, burrowing in the bed, grubs, and the beat goes on…Lessons for next season. 🙂

This is the time to harvest a portion of your flowers seeds after a hard freeze. I keep a corner of the garden for my heirloom zinnias. Gently pull individual petals away from the stalk, at the base will be a diamond-shaped seed. Store in a covered container.

Oh and if you want to paint the compostable pot/container in bright, happy colors,
consider using garden-safe paints.
Here in Canada, any paints meant for use by kids
is usually safe enough for the garden
because...well...kids tend to eat paint.
So they have make the paint edible.

Woop woop #coffeeneuring Ride 7 of 7!
18km

Today we wanted to ride part of the cycleway network we’ve never ridden before, so we weaved across the city on quiet streets, separated cycleways, shared paths and a river trail, leading to Riverlution Cafe in the red zone (cleared post-earthquakes).

After ignoring the garden for a few weeks, I got out this afternoon to clear out summer stuff so I can plant garlic. I was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of tomatillos, and even a few viable peppers and tomatoes. The yellow pear tomatoes hadn't gotten the memo, they were still flowering.

I harvested kale, hot peppers and strawberries from my container garden yesterday in Seattle. (It’s toast!) From now on, I will ALWAYS grow what food I can.

November 19: The Sun-Maid Cookbook (1980) is brought to you by "America's Favorite Raisin."

Kielbasa Skillet Casserole is trying a little too hard to include every German thing it can think of. Pork + cabbage + apples *do* work well together, but raisins feel like an unnecessary addition to me.

This is a system that I saw in a garden in Cotherstone, County Durham, in the UK. Most gardens here do not have irrigation but do have dry spells so gardeners rig systems to collect water to serve their vegetable plots and greenhouses. This is a clever, no frills system that I much admired.
