A character processing her life through elaborate daydreams (she’s a spy! she’s President! she’s an astronaut!) leading up to her writing an essay for class about how imagination is the most important thing you can have. My YA life was changed!

It was indeed really great to talk with @georgemonbiot.bsky.social.

I don’t think we spoke about this on the pod, but he’d been reading work by historian Philip Conford, whose work on the organic movement resulted in fascinating early archives finding their way here to @themerl.bsky.social.
Absolute Units returns next Thursday with a very special guest: the author, journalist and environmentalist @georgemonbiot.bsky.social!

Join us then as we explore links between people & land, urban and rural, & connect George's work to our collections.

Done!

It was really fun to get out of the conford zone, but the fishing continues! Who's next?

See you next time! 😊

Honestly this isn't first time I've been haunted by vague memories of frog-ish transformation media vaguely remembered from youth.

Part of my training right now involves running a 10k the day after you run a half marathon to get the feeling of running on tired legs.

It was deeply unpleasant, but at least the trails round Conford are nice.

Ah. Ellen Conford. I got an e mail from her years ago, thanking me for reviewing one of her books. I e mailed back, but didn't hear from her again. LOVED her books so much.

The answer? The librarian is about 35! I, however, am the perfect age for Knowing Everything. #MGLit (then #YA) was just gaining speed in the 1970s. I read Blume, Conford, Danziger, Peck, Zindel, and Blume when they were new.

Dorothy Arzner was Coppola's professor at UCLA. Love these filmmaker/ professor connections. Recently, I learned that Bujalski had Akerman as a prof at Harvard. I also discovered that Michal Conford, a prof from my BFA, had Marlon Riggs as a prof when he was a student. youtu.be/ZgWDtPVNQ7Y?...

Thanks Tom. There is much nuance and detail that could be added to this history. If you want a deep dive there are useful chapters in ‘Contested Countryside’ (edited by Jeremy Burchardt and Philip Conford). The Alun Howkins piece is great.

Auden, of course, would go to Spain as well (in 1937, the year after Conford died there) before going on to China to observe the Sino-Japanese war. While there he wrote the Sonnets from China cycle which have one of my favourite of his poems in them.

Found this time capsule of 1930s Christian socialism when redoing call numbers at the library today. In addition to essays by Polanyi, Needham, Auden, and Niebuhr, there are pieces by John Conford and Julius Hecker who would die in the Spanish CW and Stalinist purges shortly after publication.
