It’s almost Valentine’s Day!
A) I have my undies picked out already
B) are you getting the people you care most deeply about something special to spark a smile?
C) that’s all. The holiday is total commercialism, but we can prioritize feelings too!!!

Babbitt (1922) is a sharp critique of business conformity and the empty pursuit of status. The protagonist, George F. Babbitt, became the namesake for a person who blindly conforms to middle-class standards. Arrowsmith (1925) explores the clash between pure medical research and commercialism. /3

2, but also a bit of 1. Mass commercialism generally pisses me off, for so many reasons

Market-driven open access often reinforces commercialism & private control.

On the Future Knowledge #podcast, @SamuelMoore.org & @HJoseph.bsky.social discuss how PUBLISHING BEYOND THE MARKET envisions ethical, commons-based publishing.

I backpacked through Europe in the early 1970s, stayed in youth hostels & travelled with a Eurail Pass. After reading this article I feel very privileged to have seen history before it was destroyed by commercialism.

*Littlest spies the candies I got for VDay*

Me: They're for you! You three are my Valentines this year.

8yo: What do you get?

Me: Loved.

*she hugs me*

8yo: That's what Valentine's is all about.

Me: That and commercialism.

8yo: What!?

Feb. 1, 1926: No. 1 tennis player Bill Tilden criticizes the “amateur” nature of college football as hypocritical given how lucrative the sport is for the programs. “Therefore, if we are to have this commercialism of all sports, why not pay the individual player?”

It’s totally underrated and I think before its time. It fucking skewers America and commercialism and all that jazz and I’m always here for it. And “Looking for Trade” always gets stuck in my head for some reason.

....through indoctrination, propaganda and commercialism that it's a post racial society and things are "better" but it's usually a lie.

Knowing 🇺🇸 history thru and thru and speaking to those who 🇺🇸 deem as "undesirables" will tell you who 🇺🇸 really is.

This is how we know that Stalin's Big Naturals are pure Art, distanced from any commercialism.

The conflict between business and art and how good art often doesn't make infinite money and how commercialism and capitalism inevitably taints all art is older than any of us but I feel like the destruction of the mid-sized medium has really accelerated that.

The fact that it was utterly miserable and the future was bleak commercialism and abuse kind of missed the point of Star Trek.

Maybe I look at my youth with rose coloured glasses or maybe it was the people I was around, but I could swear there was a time where Australians found American style patriotism (flag waving, over the top pomp, commercialism, etc) as deeply cringe and we in fact laughed at it.

life is an artist's perspective on dappling
leaving little spots of grief
or love, or light
or even darker things

teach people what they can do
and they might paint a brighter world
instead of buying in to misery
