CLPE invited publishers to submit fiction, nonfiction and picture books published in the UK in 2023, aimed at children aged three to 11 and featuring racially minoritised characters for review. Of the 5,884 titles eligible, 999 featured such characters.

2025 is my year for being a bit more difficult. Less happy to sigh and accept things as they are. So we’re kicking off with this. Bloomsbury think it’s fine to offer a choice of exclusively white authored children’s books in their new influencer program. #kidlituk
Selection of books offered to influencers in their January post from Bloomsbury. Whilst these books all look great I’m disappointed to see they are all by white authors. Given the latest CLPE report, don’t we need to do more to actively Promote Black and brown authors

People might view representative literature as an additional or niche thing-something that you wheel out for Black History Month or a particular festival-but what the last seven years has shown us through the exemplary titles that have come through is that if you invest in inclusive and representative literature, it transforms the creative space in a profound and very sophisticated way." • Ultimately, she said of the potential response to the survey: "I think it's really important that we use this as an opportunity to stop and take stock, and then think more deeply about what we're doing and how we're doing it." Children's books should be for ALL CHILDREN! But the new Reflecting Realities report from @theclpe.bsky.social shows a worrying decline in representation. Publishers need to respond and do better: we need books for EVERYONE!

CLPE works with a very large number of teachers in classrooms If you want examples to look at, I'm sure they could offer you names of teachers who are adopting interesting & productive approaches to writing in EY and KS1 and 2. Just let me know & I can ask for you.
