It’s the 7th year of #ReflectingRealities, and we still have so far to go. Very sad to see this drop in 2023… we have to do better!!! #RepresentationMatters
🔊 Our 7th annual #ReflectingRealities report is out now! This year’s report shows a significant drop in the presence of racially minoritised characters in books published for children in 2023 in the UK.

The #ReflectingRealities report is essential reading for everyone involved with children's literature.

The % of children's books in 2023 that featured a MC from a
racially minoritised background dropped by half to 7%
compared to 14% in 2022!

So much more to say and repost about the #ReflectingRealities report and books I wanted to review AND these are my last few days off deadline but I have a big sneezy cold again so am going to be good and do nothing. Boo.

Lots that I want to say. Lots I probably shouldn’t. I hope publishing takes time to reflect on the findings.

Huge thanks to Farrah Serroukh at CLPE for putting together this important report which we all hope will spark much needed conversations. #ReflectingRealities

Been thinking re #ReflectingRealities report and the fact that publishing has gone backwards in terms of representation (including publishing authors of colour being published with big marketing and fanfare - in fact more that than character based representation). booksforkeeps.co.uk/wp-content/u...

As always a must-read for English teachers. The focus is primary age, but the findings translate across. Brilliantly compiled and presented as every year, with care, insight + wisdom #ReflectingRealities

We'd recommend the latest @theclpe.bsky.social #ReflectingRealities report (out tomorrow) as an informed counterpoint to articles like this. Education is about broadening horizons but we can only do this well by validating young people's own life experiences clpe.org.uk/research/ref...

In light of the findings in the CLPE Reflecting Realities report, in 2025 I’m going to be starting regular free Ask Me Anything Zoom sessions for UK children’s writers of colour and BookTrust will host the first in March to help reach more writers! 📚

When “the publishing industry’s superficial push toward diversity” means that they “performatively announce new diverse acquisitions but then fail to provide adequate investment in marketing...” @drmrb.bsky.social in the recent @theclpe.bsky.social report.

This year’s @theclpe.bsky.social #ReflectingRealities report is out today and it’s a must read for anyone in publishing. Sad to see that after much progress over the last few years, there’s a significant decrease in representation in children’s books. Publishers really need to stay engaged on this.

Here it is, folks—quite possibly the most important #ReflectingRealities report yet,as it signals a moment of uncertainty: will the industry recommit to representing all British children in their books? (Publishing houses, feel free to chime in!) @theclpe.bsky.social

Yes, this is essential reading. And that last screenshot should be a gut-punch: diversity cannot be merely a political response. Children deserve books that represent them whether or not racism is in the news. (1st pic is from the summary, next 2 from the report itself.)
