…via the 0.25 mm catenary. Nine sections to make it transportable. Since 1960s on loan on display in museum in Stockholm, for first 40 years staff weren't allowed to touch derailed trains; Now museum owns it. Two trains based on commercial models added to the roster in the 2000s.

There was more electrified rail using overhead catenary in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s than there is today, and freight ran just fine on it. The only way we even get it is to make freight rail companies “want” it: either they can “choose” to do it or we can nationalise all trackage. 😊

Gunnar Birkerts’ 1973 Minneapolis Federal Reserve bank building. It is glass walled and the bulk of the building is supported by a reversed catenary arch Same 1973 building after the Fed moved out with the gap at the bottom filled in, ruining it. Network Rail successfully moved the new M6 Clifton bridge into position this morning. The 4000 tonne composite bridge, complete with ballast and catenary masts was moved into position over the M6 using SPMTs (self propelled modular transporters). #M6 #Clifton

We'll likely see quasi electrifications of MBTA's Fairmount Line and Metra's Beverly Branch with BEMUs and terminal station catenary charging in the next couple years. Both could expand those pilots to other routes, perhaps even eventually pursue proper electrification.
Beyond that is...🤷‍♂️

According to an article titled "The Mystique of Electrification" (Trains Magazine, July 1970 www.trains.com/trn/magazine... sub req'd), the US never got past its peak of 3,100 rail miles (~5,000 rail kilometers).
In fact, after WWII, many electrified railways were ripped out!
"Yet the U. S. peaked out with only 3100 of its steam-road route-miles or 1.23 per cent under catenary or beside third-rail; that figure had declined to 2061 miles by 1957, and is below 1900 today no more than Poland or Spain possesses."

Dec. 2: An Amtrak train broke down, which really “gummed things up,” Williams said. Dec. 4: An overhead wire issue near Newark was caused by the contractor working on the Portal North Bridge. It hindered overhead wire construction efforts and returning power to the railroad. Dec. 4: There was an overhead wire issue near Metropark after the structure that holds the catenary wire collapsed and the wire fell on an NJ Transit train. Williams said officials are still working to determine what caused the structure to fail and noted that this problem was “hard to catch during inspection.” Dec. 5: An overhead wire problem occurred near Secaucus, and it is still being investigated to determine whether it was caused by a drooping wire or an NJ Transit pantograph, which is a structure atop a railcar to deliver power to the car. Dec. 9: A switch problem occurred in Kearny between Newark Penn and Secaucus Junction stations. Dec. 10: An overhead wire issue occurred at Secaucus near the Portal North Bridge construction when the contractor accidentally demolished a power feeder cable. Amtrak has personnel at the site to monitor construction and “should have mitigated it,” so the railroad shares some responsibility, Williams said.
