i did love del toro's frankenstein quite a bit but it did remind me of one of my perpetual bugbears in genre fiction which is when monstrous but soulful dudes or dude-shaped beings are matched with conventionally attractive women who see their true beauty within or whatever.

I've been banging this drum for a bit irt the mayoral election here. Ppl think Mamdanis the "online" candidate bc he's got a good social media game but he actually has a massive traditional gotv operation. Cuomos the terminally online candidate ranting out social media bugbears & pushing AI slop.
I do think the role of social media potentially matters here in the greater nationalization of politics. but focusing analysis on social media risks overlooking that pragmatic organizing work, because the pragmatists aren't the people who are posting; they're out organizing.
