Have you been to the arboretum out at Coleraine in western Vic? Hakeas, eucs, grevilleas, acacias, banksias...and the chocolate factory on the way back. (It's been a million years since I've been out that way, so I hope everything's still there.)

prayer circle for this summer’s young banksias 🙏 we can’t do the candles thing because of the total fire ban
Visited an area north of Perth that experienced extensive bushfires this summer… 5,300ha burnt. It was quite confronting to see, but the Aussie bush is adapted for fire.
Many banksia cones only release their seeds in response to fire 🔥 🌿

Pollination of banksias like this by birds and small mammals is important.

Check out this observation on #inaturalist showing a Honey Possum on a banksia flower. These marsupials are important pollinators in southwest of Western Australia (and adorable as well!)

I love Banksias!

My Banksia plagiocarpa keeled over earlier this year. I'd been growing it in a pot and it was happy until suddenly it wasn't. (As is often the way.)

One day I'll have a garden of my own and give the species another go. Absolutely stunning flower.

I love how the colour change allows you to differentiate the new season growth from the old on my banksias.

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos have been visiting our garden to feed on the seeds of native shrubs & trees, especially banksias, hakeas and casuarinas. Some insects are also eaten.

One of my Bonsai Coastal Banksias needed a repot. Root bound, I was hoping to trim the roots & pop it back in it's own pot but a large main root prevented that. 3rd photo has a large thick root between my fingers that if damaged probably would have killed the plant. So it's repotted & now we wait.

It looks like a banksia, don't try and take our maybe plants away from us 🥺 (but yes South Africa have something similar to banksias I think).

I've tried to grow banksias indoors here in Denmark for years without success. I miss seeing cool Aussie flowers 🥲

I repotted one of my Costal Banksias (Banksia Integrifolia). I removed about 2cm off the bottom of the roots, then scrapped the sides, teased & cut away some smaller side roots. Repotted in fresh soil & sitting in a saucer of shaded water. Progressive amounts of full sun for the first week or so.

Worked on the ice cream man for the showcase, did a big fat Bunnings run, planted some azaleas, staked the banksias, husband started our veggie garden, and got burger stuff for dinner.

Love you football holiday day🥰

And in Perth on all that sand just add some melaleucas as overstory to shade out most things and add deep litter or banksias and wait for the Carnabys

So my red gum seeds are sprouting. My banksias never germinated… *unhappy sigh*

I am going to focus on germinating natives in the future, using heat and smoke to convince them to do their thing ☺️
