Consider - Trump is now in power for the next four years, and is known to be dovish on Russia. The Kremlin can take all the time it likes to get to an improved position. Yet instead it is rushing and increasing the pressure immediately. Why? bsky.app/profile/antb...
Russia is desperate for a deal now, because they know time is on Ukraine's side. The Russian economy is going to face severe choices over the next year on output vs inflation. If we ramp up support now Russia will be in a much weaker position in 2026.

Dear Lincoln. Forgive me if I'm being impertinent, but did you think about the request that I've sent you earlier?

bsky.app/profile/antb...
Dear Lincoln, is that ok with you if I translate this article and publish it on Carbono (www.ufrgs.br/carbono), the online magazine of the extension program that I run here at the Brazilian Federal University where I teach Literary Theory?

Tô tomando antibiótico, mas quando você toma antb você ganha de brinde um monte de coisas a mais, então tem que tomar probiótico e anti-ácido também. Meu estômago já tá numa sinfonia depois dessa dose.

They then also presented a 'hybrid option' that combined Option 3 with some elements from Options 1+2 that were likely unworkable but were coming from the understandable and correct goal of trying to connect decisionmaking by planners to the local plan bsky.app/profile/antb...
The Government also suggested a "hybrid option" set out below. It's a little less clear how flexible their thinking was on this, but the core idea would seem to keep the discretionary system for "major" applications, and is clearly the origin of the current proposal.

A summary of the private housebuilding paper by @antbreach.bsky.social is here: bsky.app/profile/antb...
Our new reports on housebuilding show the Government must go further for its economic agenda to succeed. We risk missing the 1.5 million target by 388,000 with small planning reforms - to get a big increase we must either introduce a zoning system or abolish the green belt. bsky.app/profile/cent...
📄Restarting housebuilding I: Planning reform and the private sector

Investigating the history of private housebuilding since 1946 to test the Government’s proposed planning reforms.

See the original thread and report below if you're curious about the specifics and our reform proposals for each anti-supply measure: bsky.app/profile/antb...
Our latest report looks at five 'anti-supply measures' that are a major bottleneck on urban housebuilding and the 1.5m new home target - a quick thread below on what they are, why they're a problem, and how to fix them:

4. Building Safety Regulator. This has attracted a bit more attention recently, but another measure that now activates at 18 metres is the BSR. This creates a new building control process for all high rise buildings.

It's irrelevant, by definition, to what the policy should be for people applying for new visas now, which is the topic of the article. I was, as you can easily, see, replying to a post which used the word "currently."

bsky.app/profile/antb...
The so what is that the skilled work visa currently includes a wide range of jobs of varying pay and skill levels, including low paid service work. Maybe that's fine, but it's not obvious that's better economically or politically than a policy that actually does what it says on the tin.

You can see our report and Cockfosters case study here: bsky.app/profile/antb...
All the anti-supply measures below are problems in their own right. But things are even worse than you think, as they interact with and contradict each other. We can show this by looking at our case study - the Cockfosters development.

Correction for clarity - this should say "Apps seems not to believe larger flats are more expensive than smaller flats" He believes if we legalised 25m2 one-beds they would be the same price as 37 or 50m2 one-beds, so changing the space standards won't make one-beds cheaper bsky.app/profile/antb...
Apps seems not to believe that larger flats are more expensive than cheaper flats. This is false - 3 beds are more expensive than 2 beds, which are more expensive than 1 beds. All else equal, it is impossible for 25m2 flats to be the same price as 50m2 one beds on the same site.

A good example of how the US has a weaker feminist movement and is a more sexist society than Britain.

Part of my thinking here is that Option 3 is a genuinely fabulous idea - with the NDMPs it cuts right through the technical and political problems of the planning system and sets the stage for even better reforms down the road bsky.app/profile/antb...
The Government is already poised to reform to reform legal basis of planning in their bill. Option 3 of the Planning Committee reforms + NDMPs are each major changes.

But together, these possess exceptional coherence. Planners decide + rules set nationally is biggest hurdle to get to zoning IMHO.
