I’m an educator and UDL (universal design for learning) is based on the idea that if you plan for the students who need it the most, you’ll meet the needs of people you didn’t consider. Me parking in the middle of the sidewalk (my bad) meant a kid on a bike had to go in the street.

🔍 #MTSS/#RTI is more about prevention in ALL classrooms than it is intervention. Tier One is about creating warm, inclusive, universally designed environments that deliver the best instruction and respond with intervention at the first sign of need. #EduSky #UDL #EdLeaders

Based on a recent experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), I decided to use the "Plus 1" approach to UDL, beyond classrooms. To two videos I added a transcript of the narrative and an infographic related to engagement on the particular topic (in video descriptions).

I'm fascinated by how these authors name UDL as a "compassionate pedagogy" even though evidence of effectiveness "is in its infancy" It seems like a dig, but it actually sums up how/why I do UDL: as an ethical practice rather than an "evidence based" one t.co/6XUvRQsjNS

We are going to be exploring UDL tonight in my college class and I am going to have the students explore various barriers created for students based on their learner characteristics. Can't use technology effectively if we are just creating barriers to success with our design.

* According to www.cast.org/impact/unive..., UDL "is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. The goal of UDL is learner agency that is purposeful & reflective, resourceful & authentic, strategic & action-oriented"

Although I focus on accessibility and UDL as much as I can, I can acknowledge how difficult it is as an educator to really know what a learner is experiencing based on their own physical and cognitive situations. I think it is important we listen to and learn from those we are trying to help learn.

UDL is the navigation system. 1st identify the destination/goal, then adjust based on the starting place and needs of the driver/learner. No navigation ever gives up on getting to the destination. - Nicole Tucker-Smith #EquityLeadInstitute2024

📣 AHEM! It’s not actually accessible if the disabled person has to ask for it every single time!

Focus on an asset framing and a growth mindset. Create student-centered spaces where they can become experts. Give them community, belonging, and tools and space to critique their world.

Add good, evidence-based practices like UDL to that skill set and you’re golden.

A final articulation of several straw men here as he concludes, conveniently failing to mention a) the existence of UDL and b) the fact that disability services offices ALREADY insist on "evidence-based accommodations." 6/x

I think I’m particularly sensitive to the pitfalls of one size fits all approaches when the kids I worked with were considered ‘unteachable’ (they learn —surprise!) & none of them would do well dealing with a computer all day.

This is also the issue with people thinking UDL is computer based only.

You must BELIEVE that we can absolutely prevent most learning gaps (including in those with labels) with evidence-based practices in core instruction. This is required for people to accept the knowledge and give #UDL thinking a try. UDL is way more about strategic thinking than it is the strategies.

Then, Muente aligns how UDL can be applied to the C3 Framework and Inquiry Design Model (IDM) providing a table of considerations for designing inquiry-based instruction and disciplinary content skills while addressing potential barriers.

Helping students to complete tasks or assignments isn't an intervention. Intervention is systematically taking a student to mastery on a critical skill using a research-based practice. #LeadInclusion #EduSky #InclusiveEd #EdLeaders #MTSS #UDL
