OK, I agree with all of this, and I will say that while AI has been in a bubble before in a general sense, the modern AI bubble is driven by executives who are worse people and are doing some bad things with the technology, like turning a chatbot into a Nazi. Symbolics never made MechaHitler.

OK, I agree with all of this, and I will say that while AI has been in a bubble before in a general sense, the modern AI bubble is driven by executives who are worse people and are doing some bad things with the technology, like turning a chatbot into a Nazi. Symbolics never made MechaHitler.

Re Symbolics, yes, also the first domain name registered, I believe? I never used a lispm but I lurk with a bunch of collectors and a hardcore Common Lisper was my functional programming mentor a while back. He pointed towards SICP, Scheme, Standard ML, and thus was created a monster.

Death was not unexpected: when I started using mainstream Lisps in 19891 Everyone knew that specialized hardware for Lisp was a useless idea. The common thought was that the advent of RISC machines had killed it, but in fact machines like the Sun 3/260 in its 'AI' configuration had2 Nails were already being hammered into his coffin.

AI Winter 3.0 can't come soon enough and the more companies that go the way of Symbolics and LMI, the better since NONE of these companies are anywhere near as good as they were.
