#Skaldic
Drawing The Lad again. Further work and semi re-design on the little dude I drew at work the other day. Meet my Monstersona, Ægreth. He is a Mountain Wyrm. He enjoys long walks in the cold, hot mead, skaldic poetry where the dragon wins, and brutally devouring sheep and goats.

We regret to inform you that one of my characters is attempting poetry.

Whenever I try this it always comes out skaldic, no matter what I do. I simply cannot/will not rhyme any more.
On the one hand, wedding scenes cry out for lavish descriptions of food.

On the other hand, can I afford another rabbit-hole of inventing an entire food culture?

AC Valhalla is actually capturing my fav Viking vibes. Yes there's the meathead battle honor axes mead (i love this too), but also the deep and cold melancholies, the skaldic ways of speaking, devotion corrupting, fighting fate and knowing you'll lose yet you fight on, a red in teeth and claw world.

Could fránstalls (Orkneyinga ch 81 Rv Lv 6) be a kenning for silk? skaldic has: of house of shining > snake's house > gold. But > of the silkworm's cocoon > of silk seems natural. For a hat. It's before Rǫgnvaldr's pilgrimage, but he innovated and Europeans learned how silk was made much earlier.

The skaldic format helps with the word count and this becomes a super-brief story nugget, of two schemers realizing why they shouldn't be going on this adventure, but are sure to do it anyway.

In the longer version, the adventure happens between the two stanzas.

We subvert this by diving into the history and economics of why getting a new piece of woolen clothing mattered, and turning it upon itself in our story with the linguistic misdirection of "eating the young" a skaldic misinterpretation by two youngsters looking for trouble.

I dare. I #Amwriting #FiftyWords after all.

I give you: Jólakötturinn

(And because the Light of the Nine Realms needs new lore, I may expand this skaldic tale of youthful indiscretion to its mythic conclusion.)

I realized the problem immediately, there's too much setup required. This demands a TALE, a flash fiction maybe.

#FiftyWords is just too goddamn limiting. Or is it?

I #Amwriting after all. Perhaps I need a more skaldic perspective. Something weirdly poetic, maybe even embarrassingly so.

Dare I?

Now I look at this again, it looks a little bit like the end of “Nunc Sancte Nobis Spiritus” (at least the sense of it). Maybe time I revisited HAV with fresh eyes: I always felt it was a bit “generic”, but maybe there’s something more interesting to see/say about skaldic translators

Thine skaldic whimsie, as is its wont, doth delight mine eye, ear, and braine's twain halves. Neopren is forsooth a wondrous skein wrought by alchimie or magicien's seasoned crafte. 🙏🏆

🕯️🐾 RUNE OF THE OTTER-BEAVER
Hear this, river-folk and watchers of the wild:
swift as current, steady as stone.
Builder of lodges, breaker of dams,
In their whiskers lives joy,
in their paws, the calm of flowing worlds.
River guardian of the Codex.

Hel of the Quiet Hall,
Charon of the Silent Oar—
death’s queen and death’s ferryman,
two lights in the dark.
He carries all; she keeps all.
Between them blooms a love
that outlives All. ❄️🛶💛

Yesterday, I spent a solid chunk of the day felling trees for firewood, & today I'm trying to write something coherent about skaldic poetry. Somehow, these topics do not feel as unrelated as one might expect.

#WIPSnips Today marks Bragi’s first appearance – he’s the God of skaldic poetry, whose words are so powerful they replace truth. (He is also the actual inventor of ‘alternative facts’. True story.*)

#NorseMythology won’t know what hit it…
