I guess it's all about perspective, right?

It was quite funny to listen to other tourists exclaiming about it

All prepped for my print drop off to The Horsebridge Arts Centre m, Whitstable inPRINT exhibition on Saturday. The exhibition will be open to the public from 16 January to 8 February 2026. What could be better then going to see lots of inky creations by the sea in dull ol' January?

Wonderful exhibition at Sissinghurst Castle on Greece & Harold Nicholson. Interesting on post WW1 peace conf. & key role of Greek PM E Venizelos who visited Sissinghurst in 1934. Good to see Nicholson arguing in 1924 for return of Parthenon marbles to mark 100 years since Byron’s death!

Most of the irises are the most obliging of plants, putting up with poor treatment, asking for little more than a place in the sun; a modest demand which we should all enjoy if we could get it. #gardening

31 December ‘50 This may seem an odd time of year to write about irises, those velvet-warm flowers we associate with June—the very word June warms me as I write it. #gardening

I must say that I found this works well. It may sound unscientific since black spot is a fungus—I am not a scientific gardener and can judge only by results. The result of some barrow-loads of compost was: no black spot on some particularly vulnerable roses two summers running. #gardening

Roses can still be planted any time between December and March, so it is not too late to order extravagantly on any plant-token you may receive as a Christmas present. #gardening

17 December ‘50 Shady places often worry the amateur gardener but as a matter of fact there are plenty of plants which thrive the better for some shade. #gardening

How many cover up their tender plants before it is too late? These remarks may apply especially to the treatment of shrubs or plants in large pots or wooden tubs are puzzled to know what to do about them.

11 Dec ‘55 Frost jumps suddenly upon us, and takes us unaware. We should not be taken unaware, we ought to know our climate well enough by now to be only too well aware of the dangers that may leap upon us between a sunset and a dawn. Yet how many people take this threat in time?

A few chives, a solitary plant of lovage, some thyme, some apple-mint, and a clump of garlic. This meant that the wise cook could dash out of the kitchen and quickly grab a handful of something that would turn the salad or sandwich into something . . . #gardening

I have always advocated the use of pots in the garden. How valuable it is to have a few pots which may be carried indoors on an evening when one smells frost in the air. #gardening
