Water is rather deep but so clean you can see the rocky riverbed between the reflections of trees and October sky. A crystal-clear river running through a sunlit forest, Mill River, Sleeping Giant State Park, Hamden, Connecticut. October 10, 2024, 12:19 PM.

ICYWW, yes that's the same place, viewed from slight differing angles. The large boulder in the c.1900 image is gone. Would be interesting to know when/how it was removed. And the riverbed is now much higher than in 1900, perhaps reflecting grazing-induced land erosion and resulting siltation.

4/5: I can only imagine that it's been buried for most of its life and was relatively recently dislodged; it has some wear and looks like it's been rolling around on the riverbed for a little while – but what forced it so high up onto the shore, without breaking it?

Back to work on an incomplete painting from this fall...the focus here is on the dry, rocky riverbed. As you can imagine, this is taking quite a bit of time.

"Videographer Ian Shoebotham captured the tense 28-second moment as the tiny calf tumbled into a swollen river on a normally dry riverbed, amid historic floods from weeks of heavy rains in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces."
