Yesterday, Wednesday, December 17, 2025, I managed to squeeze in a very impromptu Summits on the Air activation. My wife and I had been away from the QTH for nearly two weeks. One of those weeks was spent on the coast of North Carolina in Carolina Beach with our daughters, enjoying some much-needed family relaxation time. Yesterday morning, we packed up and started the drive home, which takes about six hours.

I'm using an endfed dipole in inverted V, probably up around 15-20 at the peak. It clearly outperforms my old vertical antenna at my old QTH.

South Africa via FT8 on 12, 17, 30 m bands over the past 24 h. Monitoring with an MLA-30+ loop antenna connected to an SDR monitoring 16 frequencies from 10 to 160 m. QTH: Vancouver.

I was really tickled by the W2BX QSO. Glenn is a big QRPer, and I like the challenge to hear the low-power stations from my QTH in the far north. He was using 1W and peaked 529! For fun I dropped power from 150W to 8W, and he heard me, poorly, but still…SKCC makes for a lot of fun opportunities.

Yup, a “struggling craft beer sector” must be to blame.
That and the fact there are half a dozen craft beer places in a ten minute walk from my QTH, half of whom are also breweries, must be a symptom of this? They are always busy.

Suddenly he started hearing DX too. Worked a couple. Gave QTH as KO13oe = Wasilków, ~60km N of me.
He then QSYed to 26425 USB.

Guess I missed last night's #aurora, both on sky and on radio... or not?
I was running MSHV decoding 80m #FT8. It seemed OK... until I saw #9U1RU responding to European stns.
A bit later they came w/ CQ & grid square: KI46
