Our main topics today:
-Ukraine opens the New Year with a renewed diplomatic push. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is ramping up talks with international partners to secure military and financial aid, restart prisoner exchanges, and move peace efforts forward, with a series of high-level EU, NATO, and allied meetings planned in the coming days.
-Russia captured just under one percent of Ukraine’s territory in 2025, according to the DeepState mapping project. Most gains were made in the Donetsk region, while advances elsewhere remained limited, highlighting the high cost and slow pace of Moscow’s offensive.
-In Switzerland, residents and tourists held a vigil after a deadly fire at a packed ski resort bar in Crans-Montana killed around 40 people and injured more than 100. Authorities say the blaze appears to have been accidental, as condolences poured in from world leaders.
