The Oilliphéist is a Celtic sea monster that once swallowed Ó Ruairc, a drunken piper who continued to play his instrument inside the belly of the beast. The annoyed monster regurgitated the piper, allegedly inspiring the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

My comic tells the tale of three heroes—an anthropomorphic cat, a rowdy alien, and one shy robot. Their job is simple: find and eliminate all monsters. The Captain, Muk, and Gavan thrive on the rush of monster battles, but after facing a massive sea dragon that pushed their limits, the thrill has never been the same. No monster since has come close to matching that challenge. This story is an alternative take on the superhero genre. The script and rough sketches were drawn by hand, then inked with a fountain pen dipped in acrylic ink, eventually digitally scanned. To add texture, I used a rolled-up piece of paper instead of a metal nib to create the monster’s distinctive scales. Gavan, the robot, was named after my brother, while the creature is drawn from Irish folklore.
