Old air samples hint at effects of climate change

Through DNA analysis of old air samples collected by the Swedish Armed Forces, Nils Cronberg (botany researcher & BECC PI) & colleagues, show that spore dispersal of northern mosses changed the past 35 years: www.lunduniversity.lu.se/article/old-...

small rains persistent
yet indecisive

let us curl quietly together

One of my favorite early Quaker writers emphasized, “do not neglect the day of small things.”

“[Mosses] retain water, regulate nutrients, constitute important biodiversity, and are the ecosystem engineers that have formed massive carbon stores in the northern boreal peatlands.”

very interesting work on mosses in the arctic and their change in spore dispersal over time - also an important argument why we need long term monitoring programs #eDNA #consgen 🧪🌏🦤

Afternoon, Bluesky. Not on the ball today. This photo is all I have to offer - mosses on the village boundary stone wall. I don’t know what they are, so if anyone has any miss knowledge, please share as I’d quite like to find out. Click, zoom and stare to get lost. No micro lens.

Mosses (Bryophyta) have been around for around 500mil. years, dinosaurs encountered and ate them incidentally while browsing. Since moss lack internal "plumbing" (xylem and phloem, they absorb water and nutrients directly by leaves taking them from the atmosphere, rainwater & dust. #nature

Clubmosses are unhelpfully named as they are much more closely related to ferns than mosses. There are many other bits of misinformation in vernacular names of plants: grass-of-Parnassus isn't a grass; club-rushes are in the sedge family; and many more besides. If only we could start again!

My favorite thing about my oak-hickory woodland when it comes to winter interest are the large patches of native grasses, sedges and rushes that I've been encouraging to spread by keeping areas free from leaves. It's fun seeing which species choose to colonize which areas - sun, shade, dry, wet...

It's Tomb Tuesday,🗿 so here is a cisted cairn circle from Bellever on Sunday.
This lesser-visited one is still hidden amongst the trees of the plantation, which while restricting the views, does make for a more intimate atmosphere.

Rotting logs are great. Should support a nice population of mosses, beetles and other arthropods etc. over time.

When I got my Land Rover from The Forestry Commission, the air intake was clogged up and full of water. Also several mosses, a couple of water snails and some ticks. I put them in our pond.
