The ABMI is a global leader in biodiversity monitoring. We tell the factual story of Alberta’s wildlife & ecosystems through high quality data & information.
This Polar Sunburst Lichen (Xanthomendoza hasseana) adds a bright pop of colour to Alberta’s landscapes. Lichens like this one are partnerships between fungi and algae (or cyanobacteria) living together. A great example of teamwork in nature 🤝

Have you checked out the Human Footprint Inventory yet? This dataset tracks visible human land use across Alberta, including agriculture, energy, forestry, and urban development.
See it come to life by using the ABMI's Mapping Portal and compare the HFI with other ABMI datasets.

The latest on our blog: Read on to learn about how the ABMI’s Imaging Centre has developed a new automated workflow to better detect and delineate wellsites across Alberta, advancing the precision of land-use mapping and habitat monitoring. https://ow.ly/quKj50XgACS #lidar #machinelearning
Improved Habitat Monitoring in Alberta using Lidar and Machine Learning in Wellsite Identification

Scientists at the ABMI's Imaging Centre are leveraging the power of an impressive partnership: remote sensing (lidar) and machine learning. By combining these advanced technologies, imaging experts can now automatically and accurately delineate the outlines of wellsites in the boreal forest of Alberta; proving to be a boost to the science of land mapping as well increasing the level of detail of existing land-use maps.

This is the same location, but with a difference of a few months and about an extra meter of snow. The added height from the snow helped us get this excellent image of a least chipmunk.
