I should add also Vasa, the Swedish warship to my list of the unique and and real historical ships. I'm sure everyone knows her history: sank 1628, salvaged 1956, currently on display at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.

Winter 1875: Steam Tug VIM tows a fishing schooner loaded with bait, Gloucester Harbor. I cleaned this one up a bit for an article I'm working on. Back then, Gloucester Harbor would freeze up and tugs would have to act as ice breakers.

Modern reconstruction of the Civil War submersible H. L. HUNLEY. showing the original plan to sink U.S. blockading vessels off Charleston by running under them while towing a floating contact mine astern. This plan was abandoned as being too dangerous after the boat sank while attempting this attack during a practice mission in the Cooper River in 1863, taking her entire crew with her. The boat was later raised, refitted with a spar torpedo for an attack on the surface, and sank USS HOUSATONIC on the night of February 17, 1864 -- but again with the loss of her entire crew.

The Historical Galley is the world's oldest known galley with its original wooden hull built at the end of the 16th century. This 40-m. vessel is not a war galley. She is displayed at the Besiktas Naval Museum Command in Istanbul.

Thomas Tew was one of the most well-known Red Sea pirates active in the 1690s. He was killed in a failed attack on a Mughal ship, possibly being disembowelled by a cannon ball.

The Russian ironclad battleship Ekaterina II was the lead ship of a class of Black Sea fleet ironclads constructed during the 1880s to counter the naval strength of the Ottoman Empire Armour protection followed contemporary practice, with a thick belt of compound armour along the waterline and heavily protected barbettes. Throughout the 1890s Ekaterina II served as a core unit of the Black Sea Fleet, participating in exercises and representing Russian naval power in regional waters. By the early twentieth century she was obsolescent. On 22 April 1912, the former battleship was formally reclassified as Stricken Vessel No. 3. and was expended as a torpedo target during training exercises conducted by the Black Sea Fleet
