An 8 string mandocello 🤯
We had a good one in Chicago tonight for 'An Appalachian Christmas' - what an audience! We were signing so many CDs of our new 'A Christmas Duo'.
And for sure, one of the stars of the show is this gem right here.. the Mandocello.

I love touching base with older students! I chatted with a former mandocello student earlier today. He was reminiscing about the mandolin orchestra. I told him we were getting it going again at the Kellogg Hall in Granby!

And he's cool too. If he can play that, he's cool in my books. Has he got any publicly available recordings? I assume he's in the folky vein if he's playing mandocello.

The lap steel is a good idea! I'm still nowhere near proficient with my mandocello (or at least nowhere near the comfort level I am with bass guitar) and I think I need to do something about that.

Happy Birthday to Nick Cave, born September 22, 1957, in Warracknabeal, Victoria, Australia! I'm a fan of his solo albums & (especially) albums with his band, the Bad Seeds, but lately I've been listening to these six soundtrack albums by Cave and his musical partner Warren Ellis. More: alt text

With build #700 coming up, I was hoping to make it something really special.

My wish has come true - this is going to be quite something. A mandocello tuned long scale tenor guitar with a jumbo size body in ovangkol and spruce.

there is Nothing you could do if I got a hold of a mandocello. I'm happy with my large collection of instruments, but, just saying.

There would be nothing you could do :)

Because I know you’re all dying to know, we’re doing selected movements from Bach’s violin sonatas. My brothers will be taking the string parts on mandolin and mandocello and I’ll be on keyboard
I’m going to a wedding this weekend and I don’t think I’ve ever been invited to just show up at a wedding as a guest. This time my brothers and I are doing the music for the ceremony. The last wedding I went to, I did the music. The previous one, I did the music and the cake

Sounds like a perfect evening, and what a coincidence! Nice reworking, too.

I very nearly went with Steve Knightley's cover, but I might have a SOH song later, and anyway, I haven't heard a cover yet that is better than the original.

Here's Steve with his mandocello:

Morricone used an orchestra made solely of mandolins and other similar instrument and he composed the teme Mandolinate, for an ensamble of five plucked string instruments (a piccolo mandolin, a classic mandolin, an octave mandolin, a mandocello and a mando bass).

I picked up a used mandocello/cittern in Rochester on the way to visit family in Ontario. My mandolin acquisition syndrome continues. I’ve lost count. Lovely morning view for some Bach
