Keir-By-Bike mileage will finish on an upswing for 2025, which stops the recent years' down numbers. Not sure I'll hit 2021 levels again but I can always try.

2025: 1,600.13+
2024: 1,400.57
2023: 1,558.14
2022: 1,800.80
2021: 2,103.16
2020: 2,081.04
2019: 1,834.67
2018: 1,704.71
I've 1,600.13 miles so far, which isn't great (I'll be lucky to hit 2018's total), but it's better than '24 and '23. But I bike mostly for exercise, so ramping up with bikeable errands seems like the way to go (not least because my car is very old).

Watched the Beatles anthology anniversary edition this weekend and have now been swimming in a sea of my old band recordings for hours.

In an unrelated event this evening I also had my ass handed to me about incorrectly remembering what songs appear (or don't) on the Beatles' white album (for some reason I thought the only Revolution on it was Revolution 9 but of course that's untrue; I'd forgotten the slow version of Revolution 1).
I think I've overdone my "yell at clouds"/"get off my lawn" routine about "are the kids no longer being taught that figurative language is a thing," because I was just shown this thread of someone who's very much trying to do that (albeit in the face of a hurricane of apathy)
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

My worst one is a duffel bag of old band gear that hasn’t been used in over a decade, primarily consisting of old guitar and PA cables
Bluesky, how big is your box of old cables? If you know you know.

In three steps (and therefore three posts), it went loosely like this:

1) I failed at music, failed at journalism, and failed at music journalism all while slogging through campus office jobs for money
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

The reason my mind went to this trivia in the first place is re-reading Rutherford’s “Sarum” novel and its goofy faux-clan of the cave bear eulogy for Doggerland (aka what’s now the North Sea floor)
Oh and the northern four islands were actially all one island, because glaciers

Not sure how obscure this is but in prehistoric times, the California Channel Islands were home to itty bitty lil mammoths
Man, everything is so bleak, anyone got a fun fact or little bit of trivia they want to share

I really gotta spin up my second homebrew setting faster. My group hasn’t played in like 6-8 months and that’s no good!
I am playing D&D with five friends via Zoom and we’re all in our fifties and my young teen self knowing this would be happening would be so happy and satisfied.

My old 2010s/Twitter take on this was “scolds to the left of me/bullies to the right” but of course that doesn’t really compare 1:1
Tankies to the left of me, Nazis to the right
Here I am stuck in the middle with you

Final band-nostalgia-trawl of the year is a big one: Honey White's sole L.A. gig, at the old Brown Derby Club 11/17/05. Like other venues we played, it's gone. By this time HW shows were special occasions, so this show pulled fans & friends from 4 counties, earning multiple encores and extra cash.

New fun thing I'm doing to blot out our increasingly cruel and stupid world: Tumblr-blog about one of my songs each week, pulled semi-randomly from music I've made going back to about 1996. www.tumblr.com/50songs/8000...

Didn't realize it was Neil Young's birthday, so that means I can somewhat-belatedly post my second band's cover of his instrumental theme from Jarmusch's "Dead Man" film www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3ru...

Oh and I should note that once again, I was out biking when the current president had a terrible news day that people said would end him.

You all think I'm doing this for my health, but I'm really trying to be a flappy-winged butterfly.

And if it doesn't end him, at least I'm exercising.

The thing about jokingly firing off that Folsom Prison Blues line at someone online these days is you can't count on anyone to understand non-literal language usage in any context, but especially on the internet. I don't know why this is, but that's why I say shit like "literalism will end us all."

One day into the Craig Stammen Era and I feel nothing, which is as it should be. I refuse to make snap judgments or doompost about such things until the 2026 season actually starts.

Ventura County went Yes +23 (so far). 4 points under the cumulative result for all counties and 21 points under LA County. As someone who's lived here for 21 years that seems...anecdotally normal-ish for VC.

I should also say that my "problem" is that I don't have an actual middle name. It's far from a unique thing, of course. I imagine these old systems don't handle hyphenated names well in, say, Spanish either.
Like, I could understand (but not like) the fact that some WASPy Boomer or Silent-Generation-era programmer made software that doesn't realize hyphenated French names are valid (I've also had the capital B in DuBois eliminated many times). I'm not very French but still
