As someone with the ability to write in ASL I directly experience the value of ASL writing systems. However because of linguicism, we do need to *expand* the meaning of ASL literacy to be multimodal without excluding one or the other within the definition.

Linguicism and English imperialism are formidable oppressors, so it takes concerted community efforts to practice written ASL. We can do our part on an individual basis by learning and writing where we can. Knowing one method actually helps with understanding others. I don't like politics involved

ASL does have a written form: www.handspeak.com/learn/403/

It's just not widely-practiced because some people have internalized ableism or linguicism believing written English is superior; or they don't have the need to write because we have cameras on our phones.

Abstract: Often, cases of linguistic injustice are riddled with epistemic injustices, and thus such cases not only require linguistic justice but also epistemic forms of redress. In my view, these types of instances cannot solely be addressed through standard methods for linguistic justice but also require epistemic reparations. Therefore, in this talk, I argue for two points: first, that this is because part of what is unjust in these cases is that there is linguicism and epistemic harms that take place (or linguistic epistemic injustice, Catala 2022). Second, that in such cases of injustice, epistemic redress is necessary. To do this, I apply the epistemic injustice framework to three cases of linguistic injustice in South Africa to capture what is unjust and further problematize standard methods for linguistic justice. Although I appeal to illustrations from South Africa for this talk, the developments here have promising insights beyond the continent. This research takes into account the interests of scholars across disciplines concerned with linguistic (in)justice, language loss, indigenous language preservation, and epistemic injustice. It also contributes to recent work on epistemic reparations by Jennifer Lackey (2022) and the growing scholarship on this topic. I will proceed as follows in this talk: I begin by defining linguistic injustice and introducing key concepts from epistemic injustice. Thereafter, I illustrate three cases of linguistic injustice in South Africa, and based on these cases, I pin down the linguistic problem and the epistemic harm in each case. Following this discussion, I introduce and critique the extant approach from standard theories of linguistic justice. Finally, I argue that epistemic forms of redress may better help address issues of linguistic injustice where there are epistemic harms identified and use the epistemic reparations approach for each case.

Kyriarchy is a framework that was developed in conversation with Intersectionality coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989.

Kyriarchy was coined by Elisabeth Fiorenza, in 1992. It takes the framework of intersectionality and expands on it.

Kyriarchy Highligthed " In feminist theory, kyriarchy (/ˈkaɪriɑːrki/) is a social system or set of connecting social systems built around domination, oppression, and submission." The word was coined by Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza in 1992 to describe her theory of interconnected, interacting, and self-extending systems of domination and submission, in which a single individual might be oppressed in some relationships and privileged in others. It is an intersectional extension of the idea of patriarchy beyond gender.[1] Kyriarchy encompasses sexism, racism, ableism, ageism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Catholicism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, classism, xenophobia, economic injustice, the prison-industrial complex, colonialism, militarism, ethnocentrism, speciesism, linguicism and other forms of dominating hierarchies in which the subordination of one person or group to another is internalized and institutionalized.[2][3]

However, the anonymity and persistent textual conversations afforded by digital platforms further promote linguistic discrimination and amplify extreme representations of prescriptive norms worldwide. This presentation examines user-generated metalinguistic discussions that involve the tensions among Cantonese, English, and Mandarin in Hong Kong, focusing on the interplay of linguicism, prescriptivism, and identity in digital media. Through a critical discourse analysis of 16 threads comprising 7436 posts on LIHKG, the study delves into the linguistic and discursive practices that manifest linguistic prejudices and aggressive prescriptivism. The findings indicate that forum participants express a notable preference for Cantonese and English over Mandarin, alongside issues such as (non-)native-speakerism and accentism. On the micro level, attention is given to what Blommaert (2019) calls “small things” such as custom emojis, forum-specific slangs, up/downvotes, etc, which function as ratified interactional resources that perpetuate linguicism and memetic aggression on LIHKG. Discursively, the participants engage in othering strategies and (mis)representations of out-group identities to solidify their ‘Hongkonger’ identity. These discourse practices not only reinforce a dominant linguistic stereotype and standard, but they also foster microaggressions and potentially intensify polarization in Hong Kong society and beyond.
