As someone with the ability to write in ASL I directly experience the value of ASL writing systems. However because of linguicism, we do need to *expand* the meaning of ASL literacy to be multimodal without excluding one or the other within the definition.

Linguicism and English imperialism are formidable oppressors, so it takes concerted community efforts to practice written ASL. We can do our part on an individual basis by learning and writing where we can. Knowing one method actually helps with understanding others. I don't like politics involved

Linguicism and racism at its finest 🤮.

We have always been a multilingual country. We will remain a multilingual country. Because we, the people, are multilingual.

Also, which English? There are so many varieties in America (and the world).

Trump signs executive order making English the official language of the U.S.
In the nearly 250-year history of the United States, English had never been designated as the nation's official language.

ASL does have a written form: www.handspeak.com/learn/403/

It's just not widely-practiced because some people have internalized ableism or linguicism believing written English is superior; or they don't have the need to write because we have cameras on our phones.

@mathematize4all.bsky.social hi Dr. Lambert! Today my “Justice in STEM Ed” course read your 2015 article about Luis/Ana. My students LOVED it. It was the perfect cap for our coure, showing how racism, sexism, linguicism, and ableism intersect to oppress youths in STEM learning envs. Thx for ur work!

It’s amazing how much linguicism is driven by “I bet they’re talking about me.”

One of the reasons I send my kid to a Deaf school.
Language OPPRESSION at its best 😡

“the English Language Learners”
“Those kids”
“Speaking home language in the classroom is a distraction”
“They’re talking about students”
“They’re saying something inappropriate”
“It’s their parents’ fault”

These phrases make me lose my cool! #LanguageMatters

Not quite sure what the proper term for "prejudice against speakers of a certain language" is? "Racism" isn't quite right, since language spoken doesn't always map 1-to-1 onto race... I used "xenophobia" previously, but... idk, is "linguicism" a word?

“Bedwetting codswallop”. That’s one comment on this story about accent bias. I’m genuinely amazed that there are still people who think they can laugh off all the academic evidence and lived experience of linguicism. It’s just reality denial.

Kyriarchy-a crash course.

Kyriarchy is a framework that was developed in conversation with Intersectionality coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989.

Kyriarchy was coined by Elisabeth Fiorenza, in 1992. It takes the framework of intersectionality and expands on it.
