#HardGoing
Happy Hogmanay & Happy New year to you all. Let’s hope we can all stretch out and relax a bit in 2026 and that everyone can just find a bit of peace and tranquility. 2025 has been a bit of a challenge in so many ways, so I’m sending out Big Love 🩷 to everyone who’s found it hardgoing X

I was in a couple of situations close together a while ago, which pale in magnitude by comparison, but where I felt the only choice I had was over when to pull the plug, not whether or not to pull it.

And it's so hardgoing, knowing it's a choice you have to make, but doing so hurts you the most.

Nice! You can also etch lino with a caustic soda solution if the carving is too hardgoing in terms of hand pain.

What is Lino etching? — Matthias Printmaking

Not exactly a go-to novel for me either given how dark and relentlessly bleak it is ... tbh I even found the Del Toro film of it hardgoing ...

Huh, I didn't know that. My knowledge is largely drawn from the fact I read everything Alan Watkins wrote in the NS political column when I was appointed to write it, but I found...however came after James Fenton?....hardgoing so skipped ahead.

Oh it was really hardgoing, I struggled more and more as I went along but still managed to push through and run 5k so was pleased with that

Absolutely agree. Achieving change will be hardgoing, require a huge consensus and some personal sacrifices along the way. National strike? Civil disobedience? Demonstrations in every town and city? Or something else?

Ugh. Hope the shift isn't too hardgoing

Me editing TAWB: Maybe this book is a bit hardgoing and unpleasant sometimes :/

Me remembering the body count of THK, which several readers have told me is their favourite of the trilogy: Hmm, it's probably fine, there's only one massacre in it

There is also a great deal about the Church in the East ("Orthodox" or otherwise) and its development under the Byzantine empire, though those chapters were a bit hardgoing for me. I need to revisit some of these topics after reading a bit more.

Overall thoughts are that you get an amazingly polarised album here, but it's only the first couple tracks that sound like contemporary Cale in a cool way. The other highlights really throw back to his classic Fear/ Paris 1919 outlook. Full of gems, but kinda hardgoing for the contrast.

Yep, weirdly, I always find the first chapter of any of his novels hardgoing. It like he's working out what he's writing as he's writing. After the first or so chapter, he's found his story and I'm completely hooked.

I do really enjoy these aspects of it because as someone who works on 17th century texts and manuscripts, I'm interested in the material and intellectual culture of the period and I like the historical immersion. It's just also really hardgoing in a language you're not fluent in...

Dead in Winter by Scottish author Stuart McBride. Hardgoing if I'm being honest.

A hardgoing day. Temperature wise and going up in attic at my folks house (another challenging temp environment). Parents house has been sold. Sort things out. Lots of memories up in attic. At least found my old fishing gear, which shall use in Devon shortly. Back of garden view.
