These special characteristics generally give celebrities access to certain desiderata of life: lots of money and the things money and fame buy, and the benefits that come with these commodities, such as access to numerous sexual partners — if they choose to use their celebrity to obtain such access (and excess!) Many of my celebrity clients, who have unlimited amounts of money or access to sex, have sacrificed what they have limited amounts of — freedom, career, time with loved ones, health — in order to obtain even more money or sex. Let me provide a few examples of such bizarre risk- taking in cases that are a matter of public record. (I could provide many more examples if I were free — which I am not — to disclose confidential information given to me by celebrity clients)*. Leona Hemsley, the celebrity hotel “queen”, had more than a billion dollars in the bank when, according to the government, she whited out the words “stereo system” on a bill for services and changed them to “security system” in order to have her accountant deduct its cost from her taxes. ® See Larry David’s “Buckner” episode on Curb Your Enthusiasm, where a psychiatrist tells Larry about his celebrity patients, without disclosing the names, while identifying them by unique characteristics: e.g., a well known film director who directed Star Wars. 261 HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_017348

My position is: even the limited infrastructural/action possibilities of capitalist AI can reveal gaps in / new desiderata for socialist theory. I am not claiming those possibilities will lead to socialism - I am claiming those possibilities/contradictions are to be explored and eventually sublated.

Consider net gift. Its negative component, gift received, is concurrently added either into total capital growth or into exhaust. Thus it is the contribution to those two desiderata explained from outside, rather than by the individual’s behavior. Net gift deducts that negative component (gift received) from the positive one to leave the part which the individual’s behavior explains. Thus individual output, as the sum of growth and net gift, is the sum of desiderata realized by behavior. That makes it the unique behavioral maximand as a flow. Division by the individual’s total capital, which is her whole means of behavior, gives total capital rate of return as the rate maximand. This can be summarized in a slightly different way. Cash flow measures the means of taste satisfaction now. Total capital growth measures gain in means of expected satisfactions, discounted according to our taste for impatience (time preference) tempered by our taste for risk aversion. Output is their sum. Behavior reveals and maximizes the taste satisfaction including provision for future satisfaction. Therefore risk-adjusted output is the flow maximand. Capital of both factors, at present value, is defined as the whole means of that satisfaction, and implicitly of behavior. Therefore risk-adjusted return, the ratio of the flow maximand to its means, is the rate maximand. What Turgot said in 1766, in his Reflections, was “...as soon as the profits of one employment of money... increase or diminish, capitals turn in that direction... or withdraw and turn to other employments... Whatever the manner in which money is employed, its product cannot increase or diminish without all the other employments experiencing a proportionate increase or diminution.” Turgot did not allow for risk in this quick summary, but otherwise explained the mechanics that tend to equalize return. I diagnose the problem in quantum thermodynamics of generalizing classical work into the quantum domain. I begin with the no-go theorem: no universal measurement scheme for quantum work satisfies two intuitive, classically consilient desiderata. I assess this incompatibility as stemming from the measurement problem. Decoherence restores compatibility for all practical purposes but raises questions about what ‘universality' should mean and whether any measurement scheme can be universal. I consider a different standard of universality—in terms of ontology—by defining a trajectory-based notion of quantum work using the quantum potential. While this preserves the classical role of work as the integral of forces over distances and evades the tension of the no-go theorem, consilience fails elsewhere; no single quantum work concept seems capable of preserving all classical features, raising questions for what it takes for successful generalization of the concept to quantum thermodynamics.

I have long said I would burn our current K-12 model to the ground (metaphor) and, though I don’t at all claim to have its replacement in hand, a core focus on participatory civics/community service and historical context for what we see around us are high on my list of desiderata. 😔

one of my strongest beliefs is that we're in our situation right now bc some of the most prominent talking heads (e.g. joe rogan, andrew schulz) are learning about politics in their 40s and 50s, instead of their teens and early 20s, and we have to go along for the ride as they learn basic things
