#Demoviction
Broadly upzoning to let's say, 6 stories everywhere, would spread the development pressure across the city, especially the wealthy SFH ones, while lower income and racialized communities that already live in dense housing are safer from demoviction/redevelopment/gentrification

14. The promised "moratorium" (which may not actually happen, of course) is only supposed to last until city can find a system for putting demoviction victims in comparable homes same prices. But in a housing-scarce city that's a huge barrier to building, sadly.

Despite Surrey’s own policy requiring full replacement of affordable units, 21 affordable units will be lost with the demoviction of Kwantlen Park Manor. Tenants are facing threats of utility shut-offs to be pushed out sooner. buff.ly/PnEK3YI

(my suspicion was originally motivated by the union's lack of opposition to the impending redevelopment of our rental housing area / i.e., demoviction)

17. But if incidents like Burnaby's convince most voters that new homes are bad (& no, the majority doesn't already think this - most people support housing in principle if it's not near them), then yikes. Many more people would suffer than those dozens of demoviction victims.

4. Look to Ladysmith BC for how to disincentivize no fault eviction (renoviction, demoviction & landlord's own use eviction). In the absence of vacancy control, tenant turnover is how rents escalate & how landlords increase profits. So, disincentivize eviction by making it unprofitable.

I drew this last year after speaking to a collective of renters facing demoviction, and, sadly, the song remains the same at City Hall. The building owner's targeting the 1177 tenants again, attempting to evict their oldest standing tenant, Terry. To read more (& support) go to: defendeastvan.ca

the problem is reno/demoviction! unregulated landlords! basement units with mould and no light. infested units. and even those are unaffordable! who gives a shit about homeownership with problems like these

Very inspiring you were sought out about the anti-demoviction work #NewWest has done. That must bring it all home to an extent!

13. Admittedly, that incumbent mayor further invited this by saying various horrible callous things about the (truly sympathetic and blameless) demoviction victims and acting as if they didn't have a legitimate complaint....

books like Abundance and Stuck leave the impression that anyone who opposes new buildings is some racist HOA conservationist. this is convenient for supply-side libs, because it villainizes, by extension, anyone who stands in the way of "progress," including tenants fighting against demoviction

it sounds like it’s propaganda written for real estate developers. like, i have actually seen landlords use the very same arguments and images to sell demoviction as vitality and progress

We illustrated a timeline of a downtown #Ottawa demoviction in a feature following Bank St tenants from Sept to this weekend's eviction deadline.

So many renters are looking nervously over their shoulders, knowing that they are one renoviction, demoviction, or owner move-in away from being priced out of the city forever.

These folks aren't afterthoughts. They're not disposable. This is wrong.

good for them! i love when tenants win. landlords should be bullied routinely lol. here, the landlord (in an attempt to avoid demoviction accusations) promised each tenant a unit in the new buildings for the same price. so, the tenants were scared to fight him, because then he might change his mind

My elder friend Theoma lives in a Kitsilano three-storey walkup apartment building awaiting Broadway Plan demoviction and boy is she excited about #Vancouver's April 5 by-election for 2 city council seats. It will be her FIRST time voting! Guess who's she's voting for? 😄
