Today’s harvest in a Santa Monica Garden loooong dark green cukes: Japanese, pale: Armenian, brown roots are my absolute favorite “Fall” crop: sunchokes AKA Jerusalem artichokes. You get sunflowers first, they are nutty and absolutely delicious simply sautéed with butter. See alt text for more. 🌱

So many things.

Our burgers are salads with a patty on top.

But the wife grows tomatoes, cucumbers, cucamelons, chives, spring onions, and a bunch of other stuff. Then when we want other flavors or colors, there's olives, pepitas, cranberries, sunflower seeds, canned tiny citrus, etc....

The cucamelons are the cutest! You have a greenhouse, I presume? I long for one - tho peppers are doing ok on a sunny windowsill 😊

This is the first time I ever heard of cucamelons. I just looked them up and they sound really good.

In a break from normal
Book tour content, I am home for the day. And harvesting! Pls enjoy my autumn splendour. Radicchio, cucumber and cucamelons.

Will your food bank take them? Cucamelons sell for $2 a piece in California farmers' markets when you can find them.

You’re right i should probably just tear down the plant at this point. But i’m getting about 50 cucamelons a day! It’s hard to tear something down that is producing so much still!

Any gardeners here? What do i do with an abundance of cucamelons? I’ve pickled all I can cram in the fridge, and we can’t keep up with the fresh ones. My friends are tired of them. They are becoming my whole personality at this point.

My wife calls them cucamelons. Not sure if that is official or her term.

What do you mean I haven't had a productive year? Look at all my beautiful harvest...

Ohh you mean productive in terms of academic papers... oh yeah no that's gone really badly 🤣

Things that didn't go well:
-The cucamelons were disappointing.
-The lemon cucumbers struggled to grow.
-The yardlong beans also struggled in the same bed.
-The herb bed was a disaster.
-The nicotiana sylvestris has nice flowers but gets kind of ugly after the first bloom

I also pickled some more of my cucamelons and cherry tomatoes! I’ve picked literally over 5lbs of cherry tomatoes this summer and my plants are still going strong, it’s crazy!!

Cucamelons always pop off for me without me helping at all! They love this climate!!

Adventures in fermentation parts deux & trois. On the left, an experiment with traditional kosher pickled tomato brine of red and green grape tomatoes that I started 24 hours ago. On the right, my first attempt at pickled Cucamelons, started this morning.

Cucamelons are a new one on me! What are they like?

September may be winding down, but my #VancouverIsland garden sure isn't! Just picked - green beans, yellow beans, cucumbers, beets, snap peas, cucamelons, apples, lemons and tomatoes... so many tomatoes! Lots of kale, spinach, arugula and lettuce planted for the Fall and Winter. 🌱🇨🇦
