Source: Review copy:Publication: 13 November 2025 from Harvill & SeckerPP: 384ISBN-13:978-1787302785 My thanks to Harvill Secker for a review copy In the Burning Ghats of Calcutta, where the dead are laid to rest, a man is found murdered, his throat cut from ear to ear. The body is that of a popular patron of the arts, a man who was, by all accounts, beloved by all: so what was the motive for his murder?

Many thanks to Alistair Braidwood for inviting me to discuss Upon A White Horse on his "Scots Whay Hae!" podcast. There are so few opportunities to talk about arts and culture in Scotland now. I think Ali does a real service to the country. www.scotswhayhae.com/post/drawing...

That's how it's done. Not letting them run riot despite copyright laws, as the UK government is currently doing.

The arts in Scotland have never been more needed while being so feebly supported by govt. Pitlochry as a destination and a community resource is the right approach, imho, and I hope it is successful and that new talent is nurtured. (I'd travel to watch Simon Russell Beale, that's for sure!)

This articulates exactly the problem I have with some ensemble characters. Take the time to make em people, not plot points.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 422:
How to tell whether a secondary character stands as a person, rather than a just token. Ask:
Do they have friends apart from your MC?
Do they have hobbies, ambitions, a relationship, a job?
Do they have a life away from your MC?
If not, why are they there?

Just because it's lovely (with amazing acoustics).

And because it reminds me of the years I spent in choirs, and the magic of being in the middle of voices (tho I never heard fully the sound we made, that's a magic only the audience gets - I wish someone had recorded us!).
My dad sings in an incredible semi-professional choir in Portland and I’ve heard them sing this so many times and I cannot tell you how jealous I am that I don’t get to be one of the voices you never hear but you couldn’t live without who makes this sound possible

So very this. Don't spread your germs around!
Lemme give you an example of why behaving like an event's covid policy magically doesn't apply to you is dogwater behaviour. Not that people who do this care about the fallout, they got what they wanted.

Regardless, let's begin.
