'We were here at the beginning for the Áróra Investigates pentalogy by Lilja Sigurðardóttir and we’re here at the end. Cold as Hell saw Áróra start to search for her missing sister Ísafold, drawing together other contemporary scenes. Black as Death brings matters to a conclusion.'

Lilja definitely knows how to tap into the important themes!

'We find out exactly what happened to Ísafold and some others, and Sigurðardóttir manages to bring in other topics, such as fraud, extortion, drug dealing, smuggling, coercion and domestic abuse. All Icelandic life is here, evidently.'

'Heart is literally but more importantly figuratively what this novel is about. Some characters have it. Some think they have. Some lose their way because of bad actors. And some people are just cowards. Sigurðardóttir asks us to find our courage, for ourselves and those around us.'

'These descriptions serve to emphasises the emotional divide between these two big relationships in his life and because he hasn’t come to terms with Liv’s death, he acts out in his subsequent relationship – withholding of himself, struggling to engage...'

😍

'The story moves alternately between the two timelines and the two relationships. Liv is described as ‘a complex symphony’ and Babette ‘a light jingle from the 1960s‘ – the latter is a chipper kind of woman who bounces through life without much depth (illustrated by her musical tastes). '

OH MY GOSH! We could not agree more!
EVERYONE needs to read #DoubleRoom!

'This is a novel that stayed with me, the creative storyline has real depth and humanity. This novel deserves a wide readership.'

Oh my!

'This is a terrific novel of grief and loss and what happens when the trauma becomes deeply buried and insurmountable. Moreover he has a condition that means he is very receptive to colours and sounds, and his experience of the world around him enriches the otherwise sad story'

His fervent wish is to buy his beloved daughter Helena a piano for Christmas and maybe, patch up his marriage. There's only one problem: he doesn't have the money'

'witty, scathing, facetious, and ultimately, very satisfying. In "The Winter Job", Antti Tuomainen proves that he is second to none in his ability to mix great crime stories with an almost surrealistic comic tone. It's to David Hackston's credit that none of this is lost in the English translation.

LOVE THIS!

'"The Winter Job" is a great introduction to Antti Tuomainen's work, and if you were already a fan of "The Rabbit Factor" trilogy, you will find much to enjoy here as well. It's the ideal holiday read, and would make a great gift for any mystery lover.'

OH MY!

'...loved this series and I’m upset that Black As Death is the last time I will be among Aròra and the fantastic cast of characters that Lilja Sigurdardottir has created. I have been invested in these characters from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to see how their story would conclude.'
