We need more bike brands running movie theatre pre-show commercials.

Autonormativity: the belief—often more unconscious—that one's own particular experience of being human is fundamentally analogous to everyone's general experience of being human.

Socionormativity: the belief that the folkways & beliefs of your own culture accurately reflect universal human nature.

Two words I've always found useful:

Socionormativity and autonormativity.

The exact moment that made me love biking for transport (way before becoming aware of autonormativity) was riding to work instead of taking the bus as usual and passing TWO busses on short mile ride. I’d given myself extra time to bike and was absurdly early for my shift.

It isn't just that I don't want to subsidize autonormativity. You can't escape the giant pickup anywhere! There is street parking throughout Manhattan and the loop. In 98% of the US urban area there are no real bike lanes or usable transit.

Among many many other problems with this, denying service to anyone who is not a driver is ableist.

We're sure this is not the intention or desire of this bank but is yet another example of the ways that autonormativity harms our communities.
Today I was denied service in the drivethru at Huntington Bank on Lex & Uni in StP. Manager said only car drivers are allowed.

I've been banking by bike here for 10 years with no problem. Will be escalating this thru management. Possibly StP needs a new ordinance.

In your bio you claim to love science, yet confronted with a study you react with an anecdote and belittlement. I hope you can see the irony and reflect on how autonormativity shapes your biases.

It's called #autonormativity 👇
🌳🚗🚗🚗🚗🌳
I was walking down a street in New York and I thought how lovely it was, with the trees and the light. Tried to take a photo and this came out. It’s incredible how blind we become to the ugliness of cars. They really do mess things up. Yet somehow we manage to filter them out.

Scheint eine #Autonormativity zu sein. Das Opfer motorisierten Gewalt soll selbst schuld sein.

Can we keep autonormativity, though? Or, at least, “car-brain”?

If [the majority of] drivers that habitually make non-essential short journeys without a thought for pollution or the communities they affect, don't have to worry that they can be criticised, they will never get out of that car. It is ok to directly challenge autonormativity.

If you want to see some bonkers examples of autonormativity (and the lack of respect for laws that often comes with), read through the replies to this post. Incredible stuff.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Lukewarm take:
Mini EVs are be better for the environment etc. but they may take the pressure off of making street space more friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. Without political decisions affecting car use in general they kind of just maintain autonormativity.

I guess Sesame Street has some autonormativity issues to resolve as it pertains to @thewaroncars.bsky.social .

One tragedy of autonormativity is that any island large enough to accomodate cars (where they aren’t outright banned) generally tends to be extremely reliant on cars as a mode of transport. Greetings from Rhodes.

Not the OP, but:
a) I think communities that collectively keep voting for the Nats despite the obvious climate dangers of doing so are foolish at best
b) autonormativity is a pox
c) I have never driven a car a single metre in my life

Our tall vs sprawl syndrome. Our great bus network....that gets stuck in traffic because we still allow parking on major streets. Our autonormativity. Our insane house prices caused by all of the above. Pending potential bike lane removals. The amazing multiculturalism.

Na das hätte ja sicher niemand für möglich gehalten. 🙄 #Autonormativity

Autonormativity can be a hard mental state to break. Consider low car or no car if you have the local infrastructure! My e-bike has changed my habits for the good, even in a not so bike friendly area.
the opportunity costs of car ownership are *massive*

if you invested the ~$1k/mo average cost of car ownership - over 20 years, you'll have $460k at 6% interest, v. wasting $240k on car ownership.

that's a swing of $700k folks.

e-bikes are an *incredible* investment.

Deaths will be going to be epidemic levels, but car culture & autonormativity has normalized us for this kind of systemic violence
Not just in Berkeley. Baby Boomers - a massive generation aging out of driving - are not going to give up the keys easily.
80+ year old drivers are as dangerous as 16-17 year old ones.

We really need to do something radically different in Berkeley.

#srle

In a public meeting for a new high density neighborhood. Autonormativity out in force from the public. The problem is not the neighborhood but old habits centered around the car.
