Looking for sources for a Nature.com story about dealing with predatory 'pay-to-publish' magazines.

They try to convince PhDs/academics to write for their high-impact magazine (read by business people, politicians etc), charging them thousands to do so.

The lurking danger of people with too much power in Open Science
History holds many lessons that we repeatedly ignore. One such lesson is about the concentration of power. When power concentrates around infrastructure that everyone depends on, accountability erodes...

Funny, I usually get a lot more engagement on that platform 😂

I guess I'm starting to accept the idea that my academic / science career may be drawing to a close or changing dramatically. Unwilling to keep up with the lip service.

The food chains on modern Caribbean coral reefs may have shortened by up to 70% compared with those on their prehistoric counterparts, according to research in Nature. The findings suggest that modern reefs could be increasingly vulnerable to external stressors and ecosystem collapse. 🌍 🧪
Fossil isotope evidence for trophic simplification on modern Caribbean reefs - Nature
Using nitrogen isotopes from ancient and modern fish otoliths and corals, the study shows Caribbean reef food webs are now 60–70% shorter and functionally less diverse, indicating human-driven trophic simplification and increased risk of collapse.

#PeerReview is indeed breaking down, but I believe we should build it back up instead of scrapping it entirely.

It's how we ensure trust in science.

What would make you more likely to review your colleagues' new research?

The peer review system is breaking down. Here’s how we can fix it
Peer review is so integral to the scholarly system that research would grind to a halt without it.
