Anyway here's one thing that's definitely happening: I am going to team up with anyone -- that is, anyone -- who suddenly has a bit of time to learn some data science, do some cool stuff and get paid for it.

basically my plan so far

Grants ending and can't be renewed due to fascism -- should I just hunker down and teach for a bit, work solo on research and wait it out? What is anyone else planning to do?

remarkable how many people think 'oh, THIS liberal politician is so much different; they are cool, they get it, they are gonna save us'

no they absolutely fucking aren't. if they are running for office I assure you they are more the same than different from every asshole that came before them

Liberals like this guy and like you (I guess) are a big part of the reason we have fascism now.

'We should do a better job of trying to accept people who are weird or have social issues.'

But then later says that if 'polite society' rejects you, you should 'try to be better'

more of the same

So much politics in my feed. I get it but we have to quit variously demonizing and lionizing politicians whom we will never even meet and focus more on helping people who are actually present in our lives through #MutualAid

There are way more Ph.D.s than jobs for Ph.D.s.
November 3, 2025 at 2:05 AM
The other thing we have to stop.doing as academics is churning out Ph.D.s In 2023 there were 57k Ph.D.s awarded in the U.S., which is sharply up from numbers more like 40k about ten years ago. Are job prospects better? Professors: if you want to do research, do it yourself.

I don't think of people as awful, but it's not hard to find reports of Silicon Valley execs telling a group of eager college students that they must work every waking minute if they want to build a successful company.
October 20, 2025 at 4:45 AM
That's the subtext. Also: the messengers here bragging about how much they work are sometimes / often full of shit
October 17, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Stop the madness. Slow the fuck down. Cooperation >> competition. Goes for any endeavor: you don't have to be "better" to reap the benefits, you just have to actually love people and want to help them in collective solidarity, instead of wanting to beat them at some fucking game.

Comments from @barackobama.bsky.social reveal why the Democrats are little better than fascists when it comes to this.
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
What they are crushing along with their competitors is their own well-being, and that of their colleagues, and that of the planet as a whole.
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
The reason is that those three people are supposed to be viciously greedy, wanting all the benefits of whatever they are building for themselves. Unwilling to share with a broader collective. Absolutely focused on crushing the competition, including the people they work with.
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
Why is it that you have to work every waking moment -- 120 hours a week or whatever, like some people brag about -- when three people working 40 hours a week with unity of purpose can produce the same -- and probably better, given their improved physical and mental health -- output?
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
The only reason the idea that constant monomaniacal work is required for greatness has any credibility at all is that we live in a world of absolutely competitive, toxic individualism.
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
This is fascism and ecocide, barely disguised. The idea that great things are only possible if you create unhealthy living conditions for yourself and the planet desperately needs pushback.
October 17, 2025 at 4:28 PM
Let me say a few words about the parade of executives in Silicon Valley and elsewhere claiming that 'you can't do anything great' unless you devote your entire life to working.

AI is not even remotely coming for developers' jobs. If you believe that it is, you are buying a line from those who want developers to fear for their jobs.

higher ed will not survive in its current incarnation as the gatekeeper of class privilege. there simply aren't enough wealthy liberals, and it has long since alienated anyone else who might have risen to its defense

this in itself is not a bad thing
