D/disabled bodies also don't match people's mental image of a person with a doctorate. Suggestion to add a #DisabledPride flag design to your collection? #academicAbleism #disability

One of the guiding questions from #DisabilityStudies today as we wrap up our readings/discussions about disability and education: How can we universally design college campuses—from physical spaces to classroom practices to social events? #AccessibleHigherEd #AcademicAbleism

even if they did, they're still probably not doing universal masking #AcademicAbleism

Having been bullied and harrassed by an ableist line manager for 18 months, I can confirm that this is absolutely true.

Her big mistake was assuming that my #disability and mental ill-health are weaknesses.

(And I haven’t even ranted about the work involved in doing a PhD with *very* poor access to texts you can actually read. But I might as well get in today’s reference to #AcademicAbleism)

Before your 'interview' (or however we do it) I'll provide you with a topic guide from which you are able to choose what you want to talk about. You can also mark topics as 'off limits' so I won't ask about them.

As a Disabled Scholar myself, I understand the energy cost of participating in studies like mine, so I'm doing everything I can to make it easier for my participants.

How we get to that document is where there is flexibility - we can do a 'traditional' long form interview, we can do multiple short 'interviews', you can send me pre-recorded answers, we can do it via email or text chat...

More info on this ^ - my methodology is flexible, so I can try to accommodate as many different access needs as possible. However, I do need to end up with some sort of written document at the end for analysis.

and is, in fact, appallingly ableist due to its inability to accommodate the vast diversity of disabilities that exist in the real world. Shame on WashU for doing this. 8/8

I’m getting increasingly irate about my university’s subtle, quiet move to removing hybrid access for staff. Lectures/training almost always hybrid when I started. A few months on, more and more is ‘in person only.’ Universities, you have disabled staff and our access matters. #AcademicAbleism

Trying to wean myself of twitter. But where is the #UK #Disability #AcademicAbleism community now? The #disability hashtag here seems to be predominantly US focussed. X has destroyed my academic disability community... But where has everyone gone?

Lately, the amount of time I have spent teaching others about disability, accommodations, HIPAA, ableism compared to the amount of time I have spent doing my actual job is ridiculous. It's a form of #AcademicAbleism. (1/n)

A blog post on paying disabled people and valuing our work, and how academic #ableism gets in the way of that. These are thoughts that have come out of some writing I've been doing on inclusive disability research. naomilawsonjacobs.com/at-the-gates/ #AcademicAbleism #Research #AcademicSky

@disabledinstem.bsky.social has been mentioned, which is great because they have a feed and are worth a follow. As far as I am aware, the Disabled Academic Collective is not on here. I am not sure there are any #DisInHigherEd or #AcademicAbleism feeds? Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

I’m diving into #AcademicAbleism today in preparation for next week’s virtual book club meeting. I’m excited to learn more about this important topic!

This. I also think, esp with regard to disability anthropology, that it’s time to make room for disabled folks —> pass the mic. With a retention rate of less than 50% in PhD programs, disabled students are pushed out aggressively before they even get to publish. #academicableism

A5: Lots, see #AcademicAbleism for more.
But one thing I'd like is for places to *stop denying AAC as an accommodation.* I know people have asked and been denied and that's shit.
